I'm building myself a new machine and am not sure what gfx card to go with. My current one is a 6800GT and the two im looking at are the BFG GeForce 7900 GT OC 256MB and the HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X1800 GTO TURBO. There is £40 difference between the ATI and Nvidia card but i don't know how they compare performance wise, which would you choose?

Ok mate, lets guide you here :)

The X1800GTO is simply not an option as the £12 more X1800XT is on par and sometimes better than the 7900GT which you are considering. It also has superior image quality.

If you are willing to stretch to £178 which the 7900GT fetches, I would consider saving another £50 and get the His IceQ x1900XT, which is a fabolous card which will last you a few years, untill DX10 has matured.

If the price of the GT is as far as you can go, I would seriously recommend you get the X1800XT. It is great value for money. In fact, it's is the 'best bang for buck' we've seen for a long time.

The X1800XT does require plenty of juice however. A quality 430Watt PSU will do just fine.

What is your current PSU?

The Connect3D ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 looks spot on for me thanks, the psu is the one that comes standard in an Antec Sonata II which is a 430.

If you really like that cooler on the X1800 GTO there is always the HIS X1900 GT (£152.69 inc VAT), X1800 XT is a good choice though :)
