I am having trouble telling the difference apart from these. I know I want Western Digital as there older drivers have been reliable for me.

Western Digital Caviar RE2 500GB 5000YS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-102-WD)

Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB 5000KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-075-WD)

From what I can gather the Caviar SE16 is better but if that’s the case why is it cheaper? I must be missunderstanding something.

The RE drives are far more reliable than SE drives which are their consumer drives. I'd buy an RE drive over any other, without fail.

RE: 5 yr warranty
SE: 3 yr warranty.

However, I'd still suggest the Seagate 7200.10 500GB - it uses new tech i.e. Perpendicular recording and Seagates are reliable anyway (+ 5 yr warranty as standard).
