Which hard drive to get - advice please

Hi all,

Will need to buy a new hard drive.I would like SATA 2 & preferably a reasonably quiet but good performance drive.So far i am considering these:-

The above Hitachi has great reviews from users on here,but iwas also considering:-

but i am worried about noise issues some people have had with the seagates.

Can anybody tell me which in there oppinion is the best out of these two options or maybe you have a better suggestion !!!

Both are good drives, the Seagate is possibly slightly quicker but there's not a huge amount in it. The Hitachi has a 3 year warranty vs the Seagate's 5 years.

Which would I use? Either to be honest, I have 8 of the older T7K250s & a pair of 7200.10s.

Thanks for the reply - looks like i might be better going for the Seagate which to be honest was my first choice until i noticed the Hitachi.

Western Digital 500GB AAKS, as fast as 7200.10 and a lot quieter. I bought Seagate's and sold it after just a few days.Now very happy with WD's. Been using WD for years and only one failed on me after almost 3 years.

If you want a quiet and very reliable Hard Drive then Samsung are, in my opinion, the best.

Hi, I'll be the first to agree with that, my new 2 x 320g Samsungs are so much quieter than my old 2 x 250g Maxtors. Having said that I've never had a Maxtor fail, beside if I did my maxtors also had a 5 year warrenty...

Ive just got a new Samsund 320 gig and although its very quiet, its seems to make a very faint pulsing sound... like its speeding up and slowing down again... over and over. :confused:

Yeah but you still lose data. That warranty doesn't seem a great deal if you lose hundreds of gigs of unbacked up data is it?

How quiet are the quiet Seagate 7200.10 to the Western Digitals? I could do with a SATA boot drive (my PATA 80GB seems a fair bit slower) Not prepared to pay £100 for same size drive, albeit 10K.

it depends with the seagates. you probably know there are a two different motors being used in them. one spins very quiet the other...doesn't lol. ive got a 500gb 7200.10 with a quiet motor and its great, it's really quiet loud (comparatively) when seeking though but it doesnt bother me

It arrived today - so far great

Hi all,

Went for the Seagate in the end.

Just got one of these - arrived today. I find it to be faster than my Raptor, and definately quiet. Mine was made in China & has the pink glue.

I'm well happy so far - HDtach says this drive is faster than my Raptor.

I was also thinking about changeing my 74G 8Mb Raptor...but wasnt sure if Id be happy with the speed of a normal SATA now...Does it actually feel as fast as your raptor??? How are boot-up times etc. comparing?

Hi Naro,

The boot time is perhaps marginally slower - i suspect this is due to the slower seek times of the seagate - but overall the seagate in general; use seems at least as quick if mot quicker than the raptor. Hope this helps.
