Which Hard Drive to get...

I have selected a number of parts that I am hoping to turn into my first ever built PC :)

I have selected a Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5000AAKX) but was wondering if anyone knew a larger hard drive (1tb would be great) that would be reliable and work well for the next couple of years, and around the same price if possible.

I was told about the Samsung SpinPoint F1 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103UJ) by a mate but is it a good hard drive?

Thanks for looking :)

the samsung F1's seem to be very popular. personally i am running to 500gb f3's and i cannot fault them. they hardly make a noise and shifting stuff back forth between the 2( i use one as manual back up) is quite fast.

what are the specs for you're new build? if you have an ssd in the build for the OS and such, then i wouldnt think twice about dropping the samsung F1 into it. in fact at the price I've thought of getting one myself and using it to back up both my drives even tho one is already a back up!

The F1 is still a good drive, but the newer F3 or Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 are both more modern with a higher density per platter making them that bit faster.

I'm not getting a ssd in my build, mainly cause my budget won't stretch that far.

So going for the Samsung SpinPoint F1 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache would be alright, only getting one hard drive since this is my first build :)

Its ok, but if a F3 or a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 are only a few £££ more, then get one of them.

Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM, would that be a good hard drive then? looks like ti has good speed and storage
Yea...that's one of the most popular 1TB HDD. Personally I wouldn't go Seagate, as there seem to be more people with their HDD than other brands such as Samsung and Western Digital.

Just remembering the Samsung harddrive division is being bought by Seagate and the deal will be completed by the end of the year makes me wanna cry...

Nothing wrong with Seagate, at least they dont need a firmware flash to make them compatible with certain chipsets.
