Need to buy a new hard drive and not sure which one to go for out of these two SATA drives.

Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD6402AAEX)

or

Western Digital Caviar Green 640GB SATA-II 64MB Cache - OEM (WD6400AARS)

Cant afford a Velociraptor or SSD and is there anything else you would recommend.

Its just for a normal drive no video editing or anything like that.

Neither, get a Samsung F3 or a SATA3 500/1TB WD Black (the former being the better buy) as these sue 500GB platters. The 640GB drives are slower than these.

Slightly better performance with the F3 I agree, but I've been using Western Digital for years and have yet to have one fail. Yeah I know your going to say 'luck of the draw' but I've had a few Sammy's fail on me this last year :(

Rather than start a new thread I'll continue this one.

I have about £100 to spend on a new hard drive/s. Looking at the "This week only" the 2TB WD one and the 1TB F3 seem to be decent drives. It's going to be used to install games on so would the Raid option having 2 F3's be better than 1 WD.
Or is there a better option?

Thanks in advance.

If you need performance, then go for the F3. Bare drive performance will be significantly ahead of the WD as that's a GP drive.

I've never attempted to use RAID as a performance option, so you'll have to ask someone else about that.

I'd like to join in on this thread too. Is the 2TB WD likely to be as reliable as the 1TB equivalent drives? I don't care about performance but I do care about heat, so it's just a case of picking the right capacity.

Bought 2 F3's.
Another thread has them being noisey. Mounted in rubber gromets I can't hear them.

For the last 5 years or so I have always bought WD so I hope I don't regret the change.
