Being as i've had rotten luck trying to find any HDDs in the members market, I'm going to bite the bullet and purchase a new drive.

I've got £50 to spend just wondering what to go for - not fussed over SATA1-2 or PATA.

Everyone seems to rave about the seagates, but as i understand it the 200GB to 250gb don't have perpendicular recording, so there is nothing that makes them stand out.

Any ideas?

The 200gb and up of the Seagates (i.e. the 7200.10 range) do have perpendicular recording, I don't know why you think they would differentiate between the 200gb and 250gb models but as far as I am aware they all have the same technology. If you get a 7200.9 then they don't have perpendicular recording so have nothing to recommend them other than being good solid drives. :)

The 7K160 doesn't feature perpendicular recording, it's the 5K160 laptop drive that has it.

Having said that the 7K160 should be a speedy little number, it's got a single 160Gb platter so the data density will be very high, this gives good sustained transfer rates.

ive got to agree with massive attack, i used to have western digital hard drives but people i know have had them die and the seagates have perpendicular writing ( 7200.10 ) as well as a 5yr warrenty unlike most competitors.

i have 1 of these and it runs nice and fast no noise as well. its only 51p more to.
as for WD hdds dieing ive never had any WD hdd die on me or have i seen 1 dead in a system ive built or fixed for some 1

Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 2500KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM

just make sure you keep the drive cool and it should last you for a long time.
you will hear the drive if you mount on metal with metal tho. but you will get that with any drive.

seagate 7200.10 hdds are nice as well but i wouldnt buy 1. unless you dont mind the noise. as there is a 50/50 chance you will get a noisy 1

if i knew i would be getting a quiet 1 then i would buy 1
