I know the answer changes pretty regularly, as manufacturers have ebb and flow in quality control etc.

At one point WD Green had a big failure rate (bad batch I gather) and seagate seems to vary depending on capacity.

Anyway I'm looking to buy an HDD in the 2-3TB range, so lets use 3TB for the sake of discussion.

Looking here https://www.overclockers.co.uk/pc-components/storage/internal-hard-drives-hdd/3tb-4tb-hdd
the available options that might be suitable appear to be:
Seagate 3TB Barracuda HDD 5400RPM 256MB Cache Internal Hard Drive (ST3000DM007)
WD 3TB Blue HDD 5400rpm 256MB Cache Internal Hard Drive (WD30EZAZ)
There would presumably also be available from OCUK periodically or from elsewhere
WD Black, WD Green, Perhaps also Hitachi, Toshiba,

So for a home pc (lower end) what brands are worth buying and also best avoided?

Thank you

My last drive was a 2TB Toshiba and was approaching 8 years of fault-free usage before I decided to replace it. I replaced it as I felt that any longer might be pushing my luck, despite the drive being in good working order with no defects. As I didn't need extra space, I replaced that drive with another 2TB Toshiba.

2TB SSD prices are coming down to more favourable levels now. I hope to replace my hard drive with an SSD in a few years time. Sometimes the vibrations transmitted through my case drives me crazy. :o

OK so looking at prices there seems to be only a very small price difference between 3 and 4TB so I'm looking at this

unless there is any reason to avoid WD Blue ?

Also can anyone tell me please what he shipping cost of one of those from OCUK to Leicester LE2 9BG ?

I want to arrange a purchase through a mate over there but need to know what the total cost will be.
Also if I get mate A to buy it for mate B is it possible to have the warranty etc in mate B's name?

Alternatively how what payment methods are available in mate B bought directly?

Sorry for the obvious questions but I don't think its' possible for me to get freight quotes until well into the purchase process ?

If I've posted contrary to the rules again, or in the wrong place, I apologise but I think I'm ok given its OCUK shop?

If you add the item to your basket then view it you'll get the shipping straight away. In this case, DPD next day is £8.70. If there's some way for you to order it as a forum member then shipping would be free. I think you should contact OcUK and talk to them about what you're trying to achieve.

OK managed to find a way of doing it - I told my mate what I was going to buy for him and sent him the money and a link for the items in an OCUK cart. So he's placed an order with OCUK for a 4TB WD Blue HDD and 1TB Crucial SSD. Will be a big upgrade for him and basically something he could never afford as it amounts to a week's pension. :)

Hopefully it'll reach him in Leicester soon. (I can pronounce that but I have no idea where it is, LOL )

Thanks everyone for your help/assistance/advice. I really appreciate it.
