We have recommended a better set of headphones and a separate mic as it is a much better way for him to spend his hard earned cash.

The above is your preference, clip on mic’s result in an extra trailing wire - so my preference (and suggestion to OP) would be headphones with built in mic, but then each to their own.

It's not an extra trailing wire, mine is behind my monitor and it's invisible.

I was un-aware (till now after looking at a pic) the 'Elara clip on mic' is more or less just a desktop mini mic, anyhow like i said each to there own.
