Right, Ive decided to go for the Sennheiser HD 555. A few questions

1. Will my Xfi xtreme music work well with these?

2. Ive heard things about them having a high impedance and you might need an amp to power them, can someone explain as I dont really know anything about this?

3. Will they work with my mp3 player (sony nwza818)

cheers

1) Yep should make a good combo, does the X-Fi have CMSS-3D? If so enable that and set your games to 5.1 for surround sound.
2) I have the model above the 555's (595) and they sound very good without an amp, I use them on a Xonar DX and the volume is very loud when plugged into the sound card alone.
3) Yup, they come with a jack adapter so the jack is gonna be a bit chunky but it will work perfectly fine, I'm not sure how well the Sony will drive them though. (they will likely be quieter when used for the Sony)

Molemanmus - let us know what you think of the 555's - I might get a pair myself and also use it in conjunction with an X-Fi.

I spoke with a guy in a trendy hi-fi store in town who was horrified when I explained I would be using them to listen to mp3's - he said they would sound rubbish, even with the X-Fi chipset.

I've also heard some of the high end Sennheiser phones need a 'run in' period before they sound at their best? Anyone know if that's true?

He also wanted three times the price they are on here, lol!

They do indeed, different people will tell you different things when it comes to burn in, some say 20 hours others say 100. Whichever it is it is definetly there.

Ive recived them today and WOW they are soo much better than my Icemat Siberias. The bass is slightly lacking but Ive read that the bass improves vastly over time.

They are extremely comfortable and worht every penny

Nice one OcUK

they will need some run-in time... ive got the hd 600 ( 2 models up ) and had them a few years now.. they sound much better than they did when i first had them ... and they were good then :)

Guy in the hi-fi store is talking rubbish! 555's are very good.

He's probably the same person that thinks Skullcandy are good because of how they look. :D

I use a pair of HD 595's whilst not the 'top' of the high end, they are extremely comfortable, light weight, well built and they definitely sound better as time goes on. Had mine since Nov 2004, replaced the ear pads once and use them almost daily.

i remember last year went to my local ( next city ) audio ex shop ... used those guiys for years and spent countless few grand in the shop .... hardly any of it ive kept ( thast another story ) .... intersting tale was one of them said you wouldnt believe the sound difference ( quality ) in having a high end pc against a lower end model .

doesnt matter if i had a good set of cans or even soundcard .... the pc makes it that much better ....wierd ... but true ...so he says
