Firstly, unless you have a dedicated headphone amp, turn on the NS1000's active noise reduction. It makes them a lot easier to drive and passive mode is too demanding for most soundcards. (Edit: without adequate amplification in passive mode the bass gets rather overpowering and muddy and everything else sounds veiled / recessed)
Secondly turn off CMSS-3D, Crystallizer etc.
Thirdly, if you're using low bit rate mp3s, try a few CDs or lossless tracks instead. You might not hear a difference over MP3s but it gives you the best chance of hearing the headphones in their best light.
Edit: I don't think it matters if you have headphones or speakers set in the control panel, if CMSS-3D is off. The above settings are for music only. In gaming mode you'll want headphone settings and CMSS-3D on for most games. Windows and games to be set to 7.1 or failing that 5.1.
