Hi all

New build, Which processor would you all choose, Im thinking i5-K model for overclocking... But not sure which one to choose, Ive seen i5-2500k about at second hand prices but not sure what they perform like...

Id like something that will future proof me for a fair bit

Thanks

The 2500k performs well but you will need to find a micro atx motherboard which can only be found second hand and usually overpriced.

Personally i would go with something new and with warranty unless your on a real tight budget.

Ive found a few Micro ATX motherboards around... If you was to choose a CPU which would you go for?

6600k would be my choice new but only if your going to overclock.

I have read a few of your posts and i know what a dificult choice it is, now you have your case you should state a budget and see what you can get.

Heres a starting point you will also need a cooler but reading some of your other threads you going for a all in one watercooler.

Theres also cashback on cpu and motherboard, check to see if oem cpu qualifies or retail.

Mite be tempted to get the Z170MX-Gaming 5 with cashback makes it a good choice.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £386.43
(includes shipping: £10.50)

Your a top man, cheers for your help, the 6600k was what a lot of people have been talkin about... Yeah your right I'll be goin for all in one watercooler for now :D

Sorry to be a pain, is it worth getting the extra dosh and going for a i7 6700k or i5 4690k as I've been selling bits and bobs around the house lately so got that bit more to spend

For gaming get the I-5, would be no real diffrence in performance geting the I-7 so put your money somewhere else in the system.

e.g , SSD , better motherboard or gpu, etc.

I've seen a few i5 4690k CPU's for sale so if I get that then get myself a nice Micro ATX motherboard with the money I've got left :)

A 3570K is socket LGA1155 and needs a Z77 board for OCing. That said, it's still a good chip at stock and OC'd.

A 4690K is LGA1150. The 4690K will work on a Z87 (may need a BIOS update) or a Z97 board.

Z77 boards are getting inceasingly rare, particularly m-ATX versions, as you can only get them second-hand.

Alternatively, if you can afford to, you could just get a brand new Z170 board and a 6600K.

I shall have to have a look around then for a Z77 or Z97 board, may find something used.. Are there any new MATX boards that will accompany it for my build

I would go with the Z97 route, as the boards are likely to be more available, used or new. In fact, you might be able to get hold of a new Z97 board even though they're end-of-line.

The Asus Gryphon is a high-end board and is somewhat expensive at £140:

This is out of stock at OCUK, but I know from googling that competitors have it:

I've got the Z97M-Plus in my m-ATX build and I'm very happy with it.

Thanks for your help mate, I do like the look of the Gryphon MOBO, I don't mind spending that little extra cash on it won't break the bank :D
