Which IB to play gams on?

Hi there,

For gaming the obvious choice is the i5 3570K, as it is fast and overclocks.

There are cheaper i5 ivy bridge quad core CPUs, but these tend to only be ~£25 cheaper and don't allow proper overclocking. If you are happy with this restriction (and a slightly lower stock clockspeed) then could go for one of these - though if you do want to give overclocking a try then the K series CPU may be worth the extra to you.

That said, if the multitasking applications are very important to you then you may be better off with an i7 like the 3770K.

To get the best 'bang for buck' it has to be a i5 3570K and you should be able to clock it to something in the rang 4.2 to 4.7GHz depending on cooling, though if you spend a load on a cooler its obviously going to loose the edge a bit on the 'bang for buck' front.

As said i5-3570k. I'm running one with a ud3h and its been pretty straightforward so far to reach 4.6ghz. Can probably go higher too if I want.

That's the motherboard I'm seriously thinking of getting. Can you possibly answer two questions for me.

1.How decent is the onboard soundcard VIA/High Def Audio sound quality compared to what I'm used to which is Realtek? Realtek is only on the UD5H.

2. I'm still deciding between Sandy and Ivy but I think now I'm going to go Ivy 3570K. I know the overclocking temps are higher than Sandy, but how much higher than Sandy are we talking if both chips were overclocked to the same speed? Example, if Sandybridge i5 is clocked to 4.5Ghz and Ivybridge is also clocked to 4.5Ghz what sort of temps would each chip see, assuming they both had a good/the same cooler?

As said def the i5-3570k, remembering the K version to allow for overclocking and is only a bit more money than the other versions.
The heat difference between the Sandy and Ivy is apparently being tested anywhere up to about 20C hotter for the Ivy (dependant on how hard your pushing), although this is still within the working temps. Just keep an eye on your temps at the start and if they are getting too high for your liking just don't go too over the top with the overclocking or look at investing a bit more into your cooling methods.

Hi

1) Sorry I can't help you with this one, I run a dedicated audio card - Xonar DG. The fact this motherboard has a PCI slot to run this was a factor in choosing it.

2) Maybe 10c but its hard to compare because of voltages etc. At 4.5ghz the volts for me were not much more than stock and I saw no higher than 60c prime load temps but im watercooling.

I went for the i5 3570K, but please define what you mean by multitasking. If you are gonna run some cpu intensive applications then go for the i7-3770K

Multitasking meaning that i be running youtube, mail program, msn, google and video play same time + may be even more applications.

I think i will go with i5 3570K as people are having much positive experience with it and it is only 30 quid more than 2500k yet about 10% better.

It should be fine, if you were running video editing applications, virtual machines and Paint shop pro whilst gaming then I'd say go for the i7.
