Which IM program for Android tablet?

Hi,

I've been trying to keep in touch with my little sister over her Android tablet. It connects to the Internet but isn't on a phone contract. At the moment we have been using Skype but very often I find my messages won't deliver (possibly because she isn't often online). What is a good alternative messaging service to use? Does WhatsApp work without a phone number?

no..whatsapp needs a phone number to work.

haven't used it but you can check out KIK, not sure if it needs a phone number.

Or CUBIE is another one I've heard of.

This. Hangouts is very good assuming you both have an Android; no idea how good it is on the other platforms.

you can use it from within Google+ and GMail too and all the messages sync up. In Gmail you may have to switch your chat to Hangouts from the classic Gmail chat thing though.
