Just bought my new car today and turns out I need an immobiliser to insure it :( Obviously I'd not banked on this previously but it's a bit late now so I'm going to have to get one.

The car is a 1989 1.6 Peugeot 295 GTI. Not exactly the thing car theives go for now days I wouldn't have though. Anyway, can someone recommend me a cheap but decent immobiliser. I would have to get it fitted obviusly but I don't really want it to cost me the earth. Would a Cat 2 immobiler do? It doesn't need to do anything fancy, it's purely for insurance purposes.

Thanks :)

If the insurance have asked you to fit an immobiliser then as long as it's CAT 2 it doesn't matter how cheap or what brand name it is. as that's down to your personal preference.

Just make sure it's fitted by a decent installer.

More likely to be the target of someone who wants an easy ride home than a professional theif. I would never have a car without an immobiliser - too easy to rip the back of the barrel off and snap the steering lock tbh.

yeh i had a cat2 immobiliser in my old astra gte, payed 90pounds fitted at my local alarm/ice place. Theres loads of different makes, cat2 just means all wires are black so the thief wont know what wire to cut i think?

make sure you get an approved installer that can sign and stamp the certificate.

best off looking in the yellow pages for installers/local places.

I thought CAT2's were immobilised at a single point but CAT1's used dual point immobilisation?

Therefore, on a CAT1, the thief would have to bypass two seperate circuits in order to start the car.
