which intel cpu for virtualization?

hi guys

i'm after a new intel CPU for virtualization box, good value, so i had a look at intel spec finder website.

E5200 and E6XXX do support virtualization but E7200 doesnt

Intel naming brand totally confuse me lol

so anyone know any good website that show each cpu if they support virtualization or not etc

Any of the E5*00, E6**0 and E8*00 dual-cores, and all the quad-cores support VT.

E2**0, E4*00 and E7*00 do not support VT.

E5200 got 2mb cache but on OCUK says 1mb

Yeah I edited it.

Only the E2**0 range chips have only 1mb cache.

That CPU now makes no sense whatsoever. It made very little sense as it was.

What are you going to be running in the virtualization box?

vmware workstation 6 for now, maybe virtualbox in the future if they sort out the bugs

I've just built 4 PCs for this exact use, the spec was way OTT for what was required but work were paying for it so thought what the hell and the project is only expected to last for 12 weeks so after that they can be put to other uses. I went with an Asus P5Q-Deluxe mobo, 8gb (4x2gb) of Corsair 6400 C5 RAM and a Q6600 as the main components for each box. Boxes are all built and 2 are running Citrix Xenserver, the other 2 will probably end up with ESX at some stage.

I actually used the Intel CPU spec site to find out which CPUs support 64-bit and VT and then decided that the Q6600 was really the best fit CPU for what we wanted.

Can't go wrong with it TBH, I've also overclocked them to run at 3ghz, I know it may struggle with the standard Intel cooler but so far they've been on for the last 2 weeks and no problems. Even though it wasn't my money I did think about going for a Q9xxx but couldn't really see the point

I rebuilt one of my test boxes at home with a Q6600 and 8Gb ram.. runs 2008 Server x64/Hyper-V like an absolute dream

Q6600 when overclocked in a good mobo will performe "value for money".

Can build 2 workstations with Q6600 as opposed to the other "marginally better" chips.

Memory is were you need to be spending, the more memory the better.
