Which IPS screen for gaming please?

Hi guys,

I'm still using my trusty nec 20wgx2 which is 1650x1050 resolution and I'm feeling the need to upgrade. I want to stay with an IPS panel now as anything else insults my eyes. I was originally planning to get a 24" monitor 1920x1080 but the Dell u2515h at it's higher resolution has me tempted.

My questions are:

1) I'm using a 970gtx and wondering whether it will be good enough to run the lastest games in near max detail apart from the odd setting that hits performance badly on the u2515h or would a 1920x1080 be a better option?

2) Reviews and opinions of the u2515h seem very positive though I have read a few comments saying that there is visible ghosting in fast paced fps games. Any owners here agree with this?

Thanks

Giving your budget would help. The best IPS for gaming are the new Gsync IPS monitors. Every other IPS monitor will have ghosting and lag.

Thankyou for the reply, I'm looking at a maximum of around £350. You say anything over than gsync will have ghosting but that's not true as my Nec 20wgx2 doesn't have any noticeable ghosting, neither does my brothers hazro or my sons lg23mp65hq and they are all 60fps IPS screens.

I own the Dell u2515h and it's ok for gaming, can't say that I have noticed any bad issues with ghosting. I've noticed issues with tearing but I have usually found that playing around with the display settings changing boarderless/windowed mode on fullscreen game mode fixes the issue. The tearing probably happens as I generally turn Vsync off due to the lag that it causes with most games, shame they don't do a reasonably priced IPS Gsync monitor yet.

27" IPS 2560x 1440 would be my choice.

I did the move from 20" to 24" which I really liked and then did the move from 24" to 27" IPS which was even better.

That extra acreage and the crisp colours were something that gave me a buzz every time I turned it on.(Have since moved to 34" curved Dell IPS)

The 970 should be great with such a monitor.

Personally I would either go 'cheap' e.g Aoc or Hanspree (easyrider has said he might have a punt on the latter , so keep an eye out for any comments he has) or it would , probably, be the Dell.

Only roblem might be backlight bleed - appears to be an issue every now and then:(

Thanks AgedIdiot, I'd like the 27" but it's around £100 more which seems a lot for an extra 2 inches :) Which dell 34" do you have? Are you a gamer and if so do you have any ghosting?

I recently bought a Dell S2415H, the glossy screen looks really good and the glare is not a problem next to my window.

Glass is remarkably easy to clean too.

Had a 1920 x 1200 U2412M previously, again really good but the anti glare coating was not the prettiest thing to look at.

The extra 2" IS worth it imo.

I like to play games and have not seen any ghosting etc on either the 27"DGM or the 34" Dell. (curved screen running 3440x1440)- am not a heavy gamer but Crysis 3 appeared fine on both.

On the DGM was running a single 290 and was pleased with performance of both monitor and gpu.

I am very much of the view (sic) that the monitor is THE most important piece of equipment - You look at the thing every day and it should give you a smile - if not a satisfied smirk!

The AOC was I thought within budget:-

(the Hanspree is cheaper still but ocuk do not , as far as I can see, sell it)

Thanks guys. Which lag is this Nick? I always use vsync and i've not noticed any lag, do you mean fps dropping or input lag?

I find that Vsync caused quite bad input lag so your mouse feels like it's slower on screen that what you are doing, only had this issue in CS:GO though which you need to have fast reflexes on so it was an issue. Fixed it by turning of Vsync and playing around with the borderless fullscreen settings to stop tearing issue.

Ah ok, I'm guessing this is an issue with the game and vsync and not unique to this particular monitor

Yeah not an specific issue with the monitor just with CS:GO I think, but I do find that I have noticed tearing more with this monitor more than on my older dell monitors but maybe that is due to the 1440p as opposed to 1080p?
