Which is a better rig please?

well it seems everyone (admittedly including the OP) is ignoring the budget of £400.

So, for £400.92 (assuming free shipping):

or alternatively, for £401.92 you could get an XFX 5750 and an athlon II 255 (3.1Ghz)

if the budget is indeed £450, then for £449.92 (again free shipping):

you can pick up a 550BE for £60 if you shop around and a coolermaster case/450 PSU combo for £50 aswell, i would personally buy those from elsewhere and get everything else from Overclockers, it means yo can spend a bit more where it really counts in a gaming machine on the GFX.

My 5750 is weaksauce? I beg to differ, playing on 1920x1080 with medium settings and getting very high framerates I fail to see how people don't even give this card a chance. Sure for an extra £30 you could get the 5770, but in my personal opinion, I really don't think the 5750 is a bad card at all.

Not that there's much difference in performance between the two, but the price difference is what, a fiver? that would automatically discount the 5750 in just about anybody's book. the 5770 is just better value:)

Loses in pretty much ALL benches, wins by a slight margin in three or four games plus one 7-zip test. And it loses by a good margin in quite a few. Plus it does draw more power.
Core i3 overclocks to some crazy levels too.

are you looking at the same review? the i3 at stock was faster in 19 of those tests...out of 45. that makes it around 42%/58% i3 / P2 555. Not exactly losing in pretty much all benches is it?

Its nearly 50/50

Ive had 2 that haven't :(

Athlon II X4 is still a worse gaming performer. Such a shame Phenom II X3 aren't around any more. They were spot on for such a long time.

Probably 5% better in gaming (although losing by a good margin when both overclocked), could unlock to X4 (but the chances are unknown) and loses in 90% of other tasks, so not really 50/50 but rather different needs drive different choices.

If I was on this budget, I'd go for Phenom II X2 + Radeon 5770 purely for gaming and Core i3 + 4850 for overall. Shame we can't get our hands on 4870s too :(

What two extra cores are guaranteed? in the i3? last time i looked its a dual core, hyperthreading doesn't mean quad core, unless your meaning the PII 555? then ignore this sentance.

The Athlon II X4 can hold it's own in games, it'l not be noticeably worse but in almost every other task it's a lot faster than the Phenom II X2.

Shame on you who cannot read 'Lower is better' and confuses 19 with 40... out of 45. That's nearly 90% of the benches (inc. games). Charts aren't so easy to read any more, are they? :p

Phenom II X2 555 vs Athlon II X4 620 on the other hand - comparison:

Ive sold a couple of 4890 1Gbs for 110 quid..wish i had kept them.

Can you say new graphics cards were overhyped then? I could easily agree with that :p

Nowadays, people are recommending 5770s all around - although their real-world performance is still around 4870s, I'd say they both perform similarly when overclocked. Lower power consumption doesn't justify the upgrade, we can clearly see from new GeForce series.
