which is better, onboard or seperate graphics

No they dont mix, afaik but anything like my board which is HD3300 it can crossfire with some of the lower end cards like HD3450. But if you can afford the 8800GT that will prob be your best bet

i thought as much, i did read a while back about crossfiring ati onboard with ati cards.

thanks for your replys

As said before, the 8600GT, no competition. As a rule of thumb, discrete GPU solutions will almost always be superior. (obviously barring generational discrepancies)

IF his playing Mw2 then a 8600GT should be ok at low res, you could get a 8800GT and it would max it out no problem. I would recommend a 2nd ahnd 8800GT should get it for 30-40 £

hd 4290 is pretty terrible and its barelt a better 4200, games arent really playable on them i did a test.
with no aa/af and at 1156x res
15fps in gta iv (lowest settings)
18 fps in NFS:shift (same fps on highest settings oddly enough)
GRID 30-40FPS (usually high 30's all ingame settings maxed)
just cause2 , 10-15fps
MWwaw 30 fps mostly high settings
mw mw2 30+ ps all settings fairly high.

unless you only want to play old games then onboard gfx are pretty crap
