Definately wide is better, you can display 2 pages side by side, also I would recommend you get one that can be tilted 90 degrees and used in portrait mode so you can have a longer vertical view aswell.

ok I only have a vga port on my laptop and the resolution on the laptop screen is 1280 x 800 does that mean that the largest resolution that it can output to a external screen is 1280 x 800. And would that be good able to display two pages on word

The resolutions your laptop can output depends on which graphics card/gpu is in it. The 1280x800 resolution is just your laptops native resolution. Don't worry about only having a vga port that's not a problem.

The tech specs for your laptop (here) show that is has a GeForce 7400 Go chipset so you'll have no problems with higher resolutions.

According to the nvidia spec sheet (here) it can output up to 2048x1536 at 85Hz.

I disagree, I prefer wide. Movies are obviously better but I find games are so much better in widescreen. I have a digi TV card in my PC so my PC acts as a TV aswell and it looks small on a non WS, I use dual monitors so I didnt want one 20" WS and a non WS as it would look odd.

Are you even gonna want to have two pages side by side? Also with a 19" widescreen at 1440 x 900 it is a bit of a squeeze, perfectly possible yes but it would be a bit of a pain lining them up all the time. Not all widescreens have a pivot function for portrait mode either.

Maybe consider the Viewsonic S20PD for £185ish, 1440 x 1050, so at least you'd have that extra height. Depending on how you use the docs the height might be very useful.

You can't beat 4:3 aspect screens for general usage/ Document Apps imo. Widescreen only really comes into its own for gaming and movies. If the latter two things did not interest me I'd have probably bought a 4:3 TFT like the VP2030b, the screen swivel/pivot is extremely useful.

So I don't agree WS is better for document work, unless you have one that's 1920x1200 or more res like the 24" WS monitors. Anything less and its pretty cramped fitting two documents side by side, both horizontally and vertically.

I love my WS though, because it suits MY needs. That's what it comes down to at the end of the day :)

I'm in the same situation as ali in that I'm wanting to get a TFT to use with my laptop, as I don't like 15.4" screen + laptop keyboards. This also limits me to VGA as that is all my laptop will put out, so the monitor I get needs to have good VGA.

If I get a 4:3 monitor, it would be the Samsung 920N. Otherwise I'm waiting for a review of the Hyundi WS that has just come out, and I might get that if it recieved good reviews. Also the Acer is a possibilty. Models like the Hanns G seem to need DVI for top image quailty, so arn't really a possibility.

How easy is it to fit 2 documents (standard A4 pages, thinking word docs, pdfs etc) side by side with widescreen 19"? I've read mixed reviews about this. Looking at peoples pictures, it seems that with 19"WS, you get about as much hight as a standard 17". I'd be looking to use the monitor mainly for office/web etc use. But I'd also like to use it for some gaming.

The Samsung 920N seems like a good choice, but theres something about Widescreen, it must be popular for a reason.

Which screens use 1680x1050? The 20" WS? The 19" WS are 1440x900 it seems by standard, compared to 1280x1024 for standard 19" (or 1600x1200). As stated below, maybe you need to go to 22/24"+ before WS is fesable, as thats when you can start getting word docs/web pages comfortably side by side. Maybe I will got with the 4:3 monitors.

Its not a pain lining them up, just use the "tile vertically" function by selecting one document then press ctrl and right click on the other document to get the menu to appear.
