Anyhow, how many Americans do you think actually flash their handlight?! They turn it on and leave it on until they've finished with it (granted, some might flash it but only kids and people in need of rescue in which case its a strobe...)

I'm with the Scuzster on this one...

Torch = stick on fire
Flashlight = flashing light = strobe
Light held in hand = handlight

a torch was a stick with the end on fire to create light for a person to walk around at night so they can see.

modern times we use a bit of metal(i know more techinical)with a light at one end very similar to traditional torch just hi tech.

flashlight name just suggest the wrong thing i mean torches dont flash you dont walk around flashing it on and of so imo wrong word .
