which is the best air cooler for socket 939 ?

Hi again,

I have the original Arctic Cooling Freezer 64, ie not the pro !
it is fine for stock speed on my Fx57, and at 1.9 its not too bad @ around 55 degrees C but the best thing is that it is very quiet ! my video cards and chipset fans are louder.

Just looked at the ninja on OC and it comes with a 120mm fan, is this any good and is it quiet ? Its also out of stock which is a bit of a bummer.

I cant find the Tuniq anywhere! can you fit a fan to it? how and what size?

The Thermaltake Big Typhoon is a possibility.

I need a decent decrease in temperature if Im going to get a stable 3Ghz :)

fornowagain how's the tuniq performing for you? do you just have the stock fan in it?
Stock fan yes.

I'm impressed with it, apart from having to lap the base. Massive surface area and it pushes a lot of air. Loads temps dropped 10C from late 40's changing to this HSF from a Hyper-6. I've got a thermistor epoxyed to the CPU. Reading about the same range (under 40C) with a 20C deltaT (ambient 18C at the time) whick also correlates with the external sensor, it idles 8c over the case.

Edit: @ Stelly. The arctic 64 pro isnt the best, the best value yes but not the best performance.
Would it be fair to say the Arctic 64 is best in the performance/price and performance/sound stakes?

It's not the best overall performance but is VERY quiet for the performance boost it gives over a stock.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong :) - Hasten to add that's with all coolers running at max fan speed.

I would like a few comments also, could pick up three of these, pretty cheap. One for stacker 810, another for SS TJ08, Qpack cube.

3 Tuniq Towers? They wouldnt fit in the Qpack, and possibly not in the TJ08.

agreed with raikiri Tuniq Tower > Sythe Ninja > TT Big Typhoon > Freezer 64 Pro

I have had the freezer 64 pro got very good temps it's the best value for money, but upgraded to a TT Big Typhoon which offered a lot better cooling see sig for temps! Am thinking of getting that Tuniq Tower

This is wrong according to toms hardware.... They put the Big typhoon ahead of the tuniq tower. They also say that one of the two best in their test is the Thermaltake Sonic Tower, and that's without a fan fitted!

Keep an eye open for this guys posts or check the Madshrimps site for HSF reviews. IIRC he does their hardware reviews. Been reading their site for years. Worth a look.

"the best" without thinking about noise is the Tuniq Tower 120, it's 1kg large tower heatsink with small aluminum fins and a 120mm (25mm H) fan in the middle; if you run the fan at high speed the cooler will keep your CPU chilly as can be.

"the best" keeping noise in mind would be the Scythe Ninja, it has spread out fins which allow you to use a very low CFM 120mm fan and get excellent performance still.

for now; no others match the performance or performance/noise ratio than the 2 mentioned; the Zalman CNPS9500-Cu and Freezer 64 Pro and TT Big Tyhoon are FAR from bad, they only trail "the best" by a few degrees. And in the end I would go for the HSF which is easiest to get and cheapest all around.

this message contains conclusions based on an upcoming roundup of HSF heatsinks at www.madshrimps.be :)

This sort of thing drives me nuts.....How can there be such a big difference between this review and the one on Toms Hardware, if I could only find 2 review the same then I might be getting somewhere!

urm monster munch in that link u have linked to the page that shows the TT typhoon slightly quieter than the tuniq, the tuniq does actually offer better cooling as shown here in the same review : http://tomshardware.co.uk/2005/06/07/10_mammoth_cpu_coolers/page30.html

thankyou and goodnight

My two cents:

I used a freezer 64 pro before I watercooled, It was fantastic. :p

VERRY quiet, and even at 1.6Vcore (3000+ venice) load temps hung around below the 40's, Idles at 32'C I believe...

They're also dirt cheap. bonus.

----Edit----

I forgot to mention, on stock voltage it was happily playing around at 2'C above ambient, about 7'C above under full load
