Ok, i'm buying my graphics card in 3 weeks and have about £400 to spend on it, may be able to stretch to £450 if it is worht it.

I have had my eye on the saphire x1900xtx for a while now but have just noticed the nvidia 7900 series.

I do have an SLI board but have no current interest in using sli as a graphics option.

Could you please tell me what is the best graphics card available for £400-£450.

Thanks guys.

Personally from my point of view having seen both the X1900's & 7900's running the same software on the same main system go ATI , I never ever choose sides between which is best as I find it incredibly sad, I just make my judgement on which looks nicer as long as it's smooth:).

agree with you totally mate. i've changed between ati and nvidia a number of times, just depends on my budget and which has the best bang for bucks when i'm upgrading.

If you are buying in 3 weeks then the price of the 7900GTX will have dropped. Seeing as you have a SLi motherboard, i'd go for the Nvidia. I know you want a single card, but at least if you change your mind you'll have the correct motherboard :)

Don't forget, the 7900GTX requires less power than the x1900 and will run cooler too. Here's a review

This is my first ATI card and I'm well pleased with it.
As I'm only going to run one card, I went for the best of both worlds and put it on an Asus A8N-sli mobo.

Without doubt, the x1900xtx is the card of choice to go for in a single card setup.

I was hoping that I could find some reviews and benchmarks to see if the 7900GTX XXX edtion (clocked at 700MHz) would perform better than the x1900xtx but have subsequently found out that it doesnt!

ATI currently hold the crown as far as performance and graphics quality go. NVIDIA hold the crown for running cooler and very slightly more quiet too :)

Can some one please explain this image quality supremacy I keep hearing ATi have over nVidia ? In a few weeks I had plans to get a XFX 7900GT XXX Extreme Edition. How can the ATi's be capable of producing better image quality if both cards are using the same textures and instructions from the game? Sounds like a urban myth to me.

How can two TFT's look totally different yet the graphics cards send them signals exactly the same.

Its all in the components and algorithms used mate. ATI has different filtering algorithms (thank god) so they dont get so much shimmering when using AF than Nvidia.

ATI has better IQ. So many ppl not only here say the same thing, it must have creedence,I also reckon this too. Colours look brighter, the image is clearer, and just looks smoother and nicer on the eyes.

Your choice of the Sapphire X1900 XTX, is a good one. You would enjoy that card. Very nice eye candy and performance.

Be sure to post some results when you have got it.

Thats a sure thing. I noticed the difference as soon as I moved over to my Saffire x1900xtx from my XFX 7800GTX 512.

The games I play just look so much better now :D

Well if thats true surely nvidia cant claim to have the fastest cards on the market even if it beats an equivalent ati because the image quality is less, so it defeats the purpose.
Not trying to start anything I have a 6800gt.

hence the uproar everytime someone finds a hidden tweak in the drivers.
its well known that on default, the nvidia drivers have LOD set low, so they score high in benchmarks.

Well I would post you results but my PC won't be finished till August.
I need to spend another £1k on it yet.
