i have the choice of

WEP (wired equivalent Privcy)

WPA-PSK ( wifi protected access pre-shared key)

WPA-802.1x

i have changed from WEP to WPA-PSK, what would you recommend from my choices

ok thanks buddy, yeah moved to that one thinking it was the best of what i have. however since changing my wireless printer has gone down, trying to work out where i can enter the new key but fear it will be a cd jobby!

I've always used WEP.

how can WEP be useless?? it has a code of letters and numbers which can be hard to get into.

Does it slow your internet down or summing?

Theres no need to have anything higher than WEP anyway at home, who the hell is going to hack into your wireless? The 80 year old who lives next door???

WEP is crackable in about 10 minutes flat by sitting capturing the packets.

And Wireless security is something you should be well aware of. When a malicious user logs onto your WiFi and fires up some illegal content/kiddy porn/any of the alike and you get a nice letter from your ISP/Police you would be wishing you took the steps to use a encryption method that works that is no more difficult to implement than WEP.

Well thats not going to happen where i live. My wireless goes about 20 Meters from my room where the router is. I HIGHLY dout some guy is going to randomly stand outside my front door and do anything like that.

I couldnt even think that would happen to ANYONE! seriously all wireless connections from peoples routers dont extend that far. so people wont really access it. unless they camp outside your door.

Its all so over the top

clearly not. Ive given you the clear facts and its got like a 1% chance of it happening.

As far as i know in peoples houses they are not going to have a wireless range no longer than afew meters at times. not gonna happen....

No, you clearly are.

Now please GTFO and stop spreading mis-information and diluting the value of personal security as my time is not worth educating ignorants.

Pulling random facts you have no proof of.

1%, according to who?
Wireless range is not set by the user.
Few meters?

I've had a Netgear DG834GT go from the below A and B line of site.

Also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresnel_zone is another help to extend wireless networks, sometimes when you least expect it, it will happen.

I can access my router from my dads house over the road from me (as well as the other way round) I can also connect perfectly fine to my sisters router which is 3 doors down from me.

What have Americans got anything to do with it?
See you've been proved wrong now you turn to a completly different tone.

Depending on how far your Wireless router sends the single. WEP is more than fine..

Unless you know people in your area who will hack you.

All in all you will be fine...

Its just people from places in the world here like to go over the top and all out on everything.

Click Once
Change to WPA-PSK
Use exactly the same Shared Key you used on WEP
Update client machines to WPA
Job Done.

Over the top? Hardly.

I hope one day your ignorance will be made apparent when your "Will never happen to me" attitude comes and bites you in the ass.

If your wireless only goes 20 Metres and never outside of your property, why are you using WEP. Clearly OTT
