which is the best wireless security for me?

Well thats not going to happen where i live. My wireless goes about 20 Meters from my room where the router is. I HIGHLY dout some guy is going to randomly stand outside my front door and do anything like that.

I couldnt even think that would happen to ANYONE! seriously all wireless connections from peoples routers dont extend that far. so people wont really access it. unless they camp outside your door.

Its all so over the top

You'd think some random guy wouldnt try open your front door at night, but you still lock it right? And breaking your wifi is quicker, more profitable and less risky than breaking into your house

Depending on how far your Wireless router sends the single. WEP is more than fine..

Unless you know people in your area who will hack you.

All in all you will be fine...

Its just people from places in the world here like to go over the top and all out on everything.

Regardless how how big or small you think your wireless access point range is, unless you put it in a Faraday cage, I could fairly easily build an antenna that could connect to it from a large distance. I could then proceed to conduct all sorts of crimes over the internet safe in the knowledge that when the police raid someone's house, it'll be yours.

I can connect to around 10 different wireless networks while on a 5 minute walk to the shops that don't even require a password with my phone. All the houses are 5+ metres from the pavement.

Someone could easily be downloading/viewing illegal content or even just using up all of their bandwidth allowance.

yep that's why i changed mine, saw how an app can crack wep in 5 minutes and thought bugger that i'm checking and then changed. if you no something is vulnerable then deal with it ASAP

i'm now on the best my router has

Yep, WPA is 100x better for security - WEP is useless really, i set WEP on my old router and cracked it within around 15minutes as this was my first attempt with a rubbish router and a rubbish usb dongle. People can crack it withing a few minutes then who knows what they can do.

clearly not. Ive given you the clear facts and its got like a 1% chance of it happening.

As far as i know in peoples houses they are not going to have a wireless range no longer than afew meters at times. not gonna happen....

How naive some people are, if you don't know what you are on about don't give any advice.
You may live in a rural area, the OP may not. To prove my point these are all of the access points i can pick up from an upstairs room in our house which is in a normal residential area. I am not using any specialist equipment just the normal wireless card in-built in my macbook.

Even if it does have a 1% chance of happening, why use it.

If you use WPA, you have to make sure you use a strong passphrase (lots of digits, mixed case alphanumeric, symbols) or you're no better off than using WEP.

Tolien is right on the money here. WPA has been cracked, but only the very original version. Before anyone starts having a heart attack, the resources to do it dont exactly extend to your usual wireless hackers, so dont start panicking.

Using WPA2/ WPA with 802.11x compliance should ensure maximum security, with no eavesdropping.

802.11x is massive overkill for home users - the weakness in WPA is if you use "password" as the passphrase, it's fairly easy to guess...
