Im looking to upgrade from my iphone. Which is the better option?

HTC Desire HD or the Samsung Galaxy S?

I've researching this a fair bit and it's difficult to come up with a definite answer. On the whole I got a more positive vibe from the HTC camp. It seems the support for the Samsung is poor where as the HTC is the opposite. The Samsung has a better screen and battery life but the usability, support and new features of the HTC has won me over. I've used my friends HTC Desire, which was great, with the improvements made to the HD model is overall very positive despite the "short" battery life on heavy use.

I have never owned a Samsung or HTC phone but have plumped for the HTC Desire HD. It looks extremely lovely to use and I don't have a problem plugging it in every night so it's a winner for me.

How 'short' are we talking for the Desire HD battery life? Assuming Bluetooth & Wifi on all the time, a couple of hours of video playback and the odd bit of browsing & texting?

No idea, I don't own one yet. It depends on how you use it, as you mention. Looks like setting the phone up makes a significant difference and the battery life improves after a few cycles of charge.

I wouldn't have ordered it if I thought it wouldn't last at least a day with moderate use. It looks like some people just whine for the sake of it, it's a powerful smartphone with a large screen - I wouldn't expect it to last days.

Quite curious how long it lasts with my level of use.

Just got a desire-z (posting from it now). Upgrade from iphone 3gs. Working well so far and feels pretty zippy given that it is slower cpu than the HD. Guy at work has a GalaxyS and likes it but is still on Android 2.1 while this HTC has 2.2 out of the box.

Galaxy s battery is much better. I get about 70% left after a full day. Heavy use like today mp3, calls, net etc I'm at 50 %. You will not get near that with the desire hd. Video seems smoother on the samsung too.

I've got a DHD and my girlfriend's got an SGS. Personally, without being bias, I prefer the DHD. The screen's bigger, it's more polished out the box (I hate the jigsaw-style stock lock screen on the SGS), and it's weightier too which I much prefer to a featherlight phone. It's also much snappier when performing multiple tasks etc.

Video seems smoother on the samsung too.
I gather you mean visually smoother due to the super amoled?

Personally I was in two minds about the Galaxy S before the DHD came along, it's a little plasticy and I'm not a fan of the design, it is lighter and thinner than the DHD albeit by a small amount and of course has the super amoled screen with better colours and blacks.

The desire HD is built very sturdily with the aluminium body it feels great, the screen size is definitely a great bonus too and the SLCD is good for browsing and general use.

So physically you've got a slightly bigger and heavier phone with the DHD but the screen is bigger and it feels so much nicer to hold. DHD also has a lot of extra sense features built in.

Both devices now have 2.2 and with it quadrant benchmarks them both similarly overall but the benchmark breakdown is quite telling, different strengths on both devices:

Both have excellent onboard space for apps too, I don't think you'll ever run out. Personally I think with 2.2 both devices are very powerful and capable, I think the main thing that will make you choose is to hold them both in your hand and get a feel for how they are in the hand and how you like one or the other screen too.

Personally I picked the Desire HD, all round I think it's more powerful in the right places, I love the aluminium case and overall design, not to mention the huge screen is great.

I'm very impressed with my DHD. The big screen really makes a difference, although currently using 63% of the power consumption for display! Even with fair use the battery is normally somewhere in the green by the evening.
I have heard that the SGS has a better screen due to the amoled stuff, but haven't seen one to compare but I'd say the DHD screen is very high quality.
Also supposedly should be one of the first to get gingerbread :)

We bought both for work and I had them for a weekend. Bit of an odd one as the samsung screen is more vibrant, but the Desire HD's screen is bigger and the pixel density seems higher.

I prefer the Samsung interface but the build quality isn't very good and the phone is very light (which I don't like).

We've got 3 Samsung Nexus S' inbound and a Desire Z so that will be an interesting comparison.

Well I opted for the HTC desire HD today.

Haven't used andriod really. Is there a place I can view the apps list without having the andriod phone yet (its being delivered tomorrow)

Check out appbrain, can search pretty much all the apps there, but like the iPhone there are over 100,000 of them so it might be worth looking through the Essential Android Apps thread (backwards) to get an idea of what's new atm

Great choice on the DHD, much better build quality than the SGS, you get a flash for the camera (& torch too), there are no issues with the GPS (unlike SGS), HTC Sense UI is great and regular HTC updates too (Samsung seem a little suspect).
The 1ghz hummingbird is a tiny bit faster on the SGS than the 1ghz snapdragon on the HTC, but that's all the SGS has to offer really.
Even my vanilla Desire is a better all round phone than my mates SGS so your DHD is sure to be the right choice.

This is the Android market: http://www.android.com/market/#app=ix.com.android.VirtualRecorder

I think both phones are great... I just perfer the sgs, but id say there's only 2% in it. Nearly got the htc, but the sar of the sgs is only 0.23.

No issues with gps here... Locks on in a few seconds, but sometimes has troubles inside. Sgs camera is better but no flash :(

But big one for me, dhd ringtones are far too quiet.

Would love to hear your first impressions when you get it. I won't be unboxing mine until Christmas day

Seriously, you bought a phone based on a SAR rating?

EDIT: reply to ninja edit lol. Just edit the ringtones with one of the many free apps and give it some more oomph! No problem.

BTW: Joking aside, whichever droid phone you guys get, you'll love the android OS I'm sure. Root your phone and frick around with it to your hearts content (bit like your PC). My mate just received his HTC Mozart and I'm really really disappointed with the MS OS, it's got loads of fancy effects but very little intuition (if thats a word) and it's very underdeveloped in my opinion (most ugly mobile OS home screen I've ever seen too). Stick with android for now.
Either way, maybe we should all be just thankful we've got Android (Linux) instead of M$ on our phones. This time Linux has a head start and a huge backer in Google. Let's just hope the sheep (like my mate "I just know I can trust the MS name") don't ruin things.
