Which is the better budget processor?

I currently have a pentium 940 and have the choice of 2 bargain upgrades (wwith new mobo obviously) - E6600 or Athlon 64x2 6000+. Very simple question - which should i go for?

E6600 would be my pick, should hit 3.6ghz easily

E6600 although going the AMD route with a decent mobo would allow for future upgrades. LGA775 will be killed off in a year or so.

Agreed, building a new system from the ground up on LGA775 seems almost pointless nowadays as 775's days are basically numbered.

If you not planning any major upgrades in the near future go for the E6600

Would the Asus M3N78 Pro be acceptable if I was upgrading to a better processor at a later date?

Basically I can get a 6000+, mobo and 2gb 6400 RAM for £50 so if that setup is decent enough with a 9800GTX or something then Ill go for it

4 gig of ram is the sweet spot these days.

my setup is with a 4800 @ 3ghz and it handles a 8800gtx just fine
