I am currently with Virgin and am suppose to get 4 Mb download speed. Currently I get slow down at peak times down to about 0.5 Mb. This problem has been confirmed by Virgin and they claim that they are "getting round" to sorting it out.

Is there any ISP avalible that doesn't get slow down at peak times?
If not, is their anyone in the Edinburgh area that could comment on there connection.

I'd recommend UKFSN (Entanet Reseller)

The only slowdown they have is a latency monitor at thier end which bumps down everyones speeds at very busy periods to make sure pings etc stay mostly fine, and as your line is a 4mb capable one, you're likely not to get affected by it most of the time :)

Theres a few UKFSN threads you can look through to find more indepth info, and quite a few happy customers on this board :)

Im on the office 45 package. 45GB a month peak, 330GB offpeak (10pm-8am weekdays, and all weekend), suits me fine :D

If you're with Virgin Media (ex Telewest/NTL) then they're your only option unless you get a BT phoneline fitted and pay the appropriate installation and rental.

That isn't really an answer, as there are loads of ADSL ISPs.

I don't think that it would be worth going down the UKFSN route, as it's apparantly a hardware issue on our lines that is causing the slowdown.

I'm currently thinking that we should go for BT as it's the easiest option, but I don't know if they have similar slow-down issues.

Yes, there are loads of ADSL ISPs but if the OP is on cable he doesn't have access to them until he gets (and pays for) a BT phoneline.

I am aware that I will need a BT line, but before getting one installed I want to find out if the problem is ISP wide or just Virgin.

Pretty much every ADSL ISP will suffer from some slowdown at peak times due to congestion either at the exchange or on the ISP's own Centrals.

ISPs usually size their infrastructure based on an average usage rather than providing sufficient bandwidth for each customer to have full capacity at all times so slowdowns are pretty much inevitable. The shared nature of ADSL also means that even if your ISP has plenty of capacity onto its own network there is still a certain amount of the infrastructure which is BT owned and shared among all ISPs.

There are ways to avoid this - unbundled ADSL like Be or cable as these services have more control over their infrastructure and can invest in more capacity more easily. Unfortunately unbundled services are not available at all exchanges.

I'm on virgin adsl and orginally started with 8mb Max service but due to congestion at my local exchange and wanting a more stable connection i mananged to get 2mb datastream adsl and its awesome - 20 ms latency sometimes peaks at 21ms :p
