Which Laptop Processor?

Hi Guys

Helping someone to buy a new laptop. They are a business user, looking for a mid range laptop that can get everyday stuff like Word, graphic design, browsing the web, managing photo archives etc done.

They have found a laptop at £350 they quite like. Which processors should I be looking at for the £350 to £500 level, as I might persuade them to spend a bit more if it's worth it.

Thanks for any input, however brief.

OK, thanks for the reply.

I was thinking along the lines of should I go with Windows 8, or is Win 7 actually better. I'll probably go with the newest though.

Are there different versions of Win 8, I'm slightly out of the loop.

Thanks

I would get a machine with Windows 8.1.

8.1 is the re-release/refresh of Windows 8, it fixes several of the issues that Windows 8.0 users complained about.

As far as the Windows 7 vs Windows 8 argument goes, Windows 8 can do everything that 7 can do, and there are a few convenient improvements (folder management and other things), on top of that it supports DirectX 12 whereas Windows 7 does not, and because it is a newer OS, it is probable that Microsoft will support it for longer. :)

Hybrid shutdown is a nice feature for laptops as well, it puts the laptop in a kind of "reset deep-sleep" mode instead of fully shutting down all services. It means that even a laptop with a mechanical HDD will seem to load windows almost instantly. It was a breath of fresh air with my old AMD Turion laptop, as Windows 7 would take a few minutes to load on that thing. :p

The two versions you might find are 8.1 and 8.1 Pro.

Here is a quick official comparison of the features. :) - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/compare

Just make sure it is 64bit. (I imagine it will be, but some laptop distributers do funny things...)

What CPU's are available in that price bracket? Also what kind of programs will be used for the "graphic design"? :)

Looks like Intel Core i3's and i5's if you go a bit more expensive.

Graphic design would be Photoshop CS3, Fireworks, Illustrator CS3, although I might upgrade to Adobe Creative Cloud.

Thanks

To use Adobe Creative Cloud apps, Adoble recommended 8GB memory so you need either i3 or i5 laptop with 8GB RAM and maybe touchscreen that will be easier to designing graphics on screen.

It won't be much easier to have a touchscreen unless it works with a Wacom stylus or something.
