On a budget of £200 at the moment but require a starter lens so I can save up for a real nice one..

I want to do a mix of photography, but quite like landscape.

Should I buy Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS - EF-S for £65 or the Canon EF 28-105mm F3.5-4.5 USM II AF Zoom Lens for £150?

I want a good lens for now that will produce the best quality under £200, but unsure. Not new to cameras in general, but I am to DSLRs.

I guess if I had to have one lens to start with (knowing what I know now...) I would probably pick the EF-S 15-85mm to go with a 700d but I suspect it might be a bit expensive for the budget you've got (as would the 17-55mm F2.8 which is another nice lens).

You could get the mk2 18-55mm lens and the mk2 55-250mm EF-S lenses from MPB for about £175 for the two which sounds alright :)

http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk - its second hand stuff but you get a warranty and they've got a good rep.

Another option to consider is the Canon 18-135 STM, it's a middle ground lens but has an extremely versatile range and with STM on the 700 it will be pretty good for video too, covers both the focal ranges you mentioned.

I really enjoyed it before I upgraded my lenses, sometimes I still wish I had it. Autofocus is extremely fast and accurate and I have quite a few surprisingly good shots with it. Just over your budget new and definetly in your budget 2nd hand.

I started with the 18-135mm STM lens on my 650d. It was alright but 18mm wasn't wide enough for my liking. This is why I'd pick a 15-85mm for my one lens if I had to start again and only have one :) I would use the 15-17mm more than the 86-135mm

This is why I've got 11-16mm for Iceland :)

18mm is good but I just love pics a bit wider for landscapes, most of the time.

Yeah, it's difficult to get a lens that does everything... Impossible really :) That's why there's so many alternatives.

If you want to make the most out of just using one lens then 15-85mm seems optimal. After that then a 3 lens set (10-18 / 18-55 / 55-250) covers a lot of ground for a low price which is what the OP is after really :)

Yeah, depends what you want to shoot as well, if you want macro photography you'll need another lens!

But what you said is what would fit me as I'm interested in landscape photography, landscape and everyday (18-55) the 250 or more for motorsport.

Thanks for the advice. I went for the kit lens 18-55mm that would have come with my camera (I bought the body only). Figured it'd be best to start there and get used to my DSLR, then realise my limits with the lens and see how much use I get out of it.

In the mean time I'll be saving up for a real quality lens!
