Which Lens for Canon EOS 400D??? Im a noob with DSLRs!

i've read the link about lenses now i understand it now.

Would these fit the canon eos 400d or would it need a different connector or something:

Sigma Zoom Telephoto 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro AutoFocus Lens
Sigma Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto 28-70mm f/2.8-4 DG AF Lens
Filter Size Diameter: 58mm

I have seen them on an auction site both of them together for a nice price, it says they work with the canon EOS/EF.

They seem decent spec to me, right?

They should be fine as a starting lens, but if you don't know what shutter speed/aperture is follow people's advice and get a bridge camera.

It will tell you what fit the lens comes with (but you cant change it once bought). Most Sigma lenses have a Canon fit. If it's on a 2nd hand site you'll need to ask what fit it is. Both those lenses have a Canon fit (assuming the 28-70 you're talking about is not the HSZ version), but the reason they're cheap is they're not that good. Well the 28-70 is ok.

Buy the 400D, it's a great camera, just dont expect any normal 'point and click' photos to be any better quality than a normal camera, unless you know how to use it!

well if i get the 400d i will be reading the manual front to back and reading up on photography, i wont just point and shoot.

the 28-70mm is f/2.8-4, which is pretty decent, obv not f/1.8 but those cost a bomb for a zoom 1 of those.

specs for the 28-70mm: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3265&navigator=2

specs for the 70-300mm:
http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3304&navigator=3

again, the f/4-5.6 aint amazing but telescopic with f/2.8 or so are about the same price as the camera, i wouldnt be using the 70-300mm that often, mainly the 28-70mm.

what do you guys think of the lenses now you can see the full specs?

I have the sigma APO lens and it's been brilliant. I look forward to showing everyone some of my safari pictures when I finally get back to the UK!

Initially, Id still spend the first month in playing with the cameras kit lens.

Pick an object maybe indoors that is a few meters away to be used as your test target. Exhaust as many combinations of zoom, focal length, ISO that you can. Repeat the test at a different zoom. Then do the same on objects outdoors and in other lighting conditions (using tripod if possible). You will end up taking hundreds of test shots, but at least you will be able to compare the pictures, especially if the lens isnt a constant aperture throughout the range. ie, the kit lens is f3.5 to f5.6 within the 18-55mm range, while others might be f2.8 thoughout. You learn useful stuff such as why lighting is important, tripods, flash, etc.

In the early stages, I think this is more important than having a good lense. Well, its just my opinion - I didnt buy a decent lens until I figured out what different combinations would result in. I also started out on the cheap by buying a 50mm as a first lens (plus it was a prime). And of course, after buying a lens, you run the whole slew of tests all over again. (Well, I do anyway!)

I've just bought the 400d + kit lens for cheap, i was gunna buy the camera only for cheap, but with this deal its only £31 more for the lens and they are worth about £55 ish on auction sites, so im gunna play with the kit lens for a while and see if it suits my needs, if it doesnt then i'll sell it on and buy a better lens or 2 lenses.

Obviously i get £50 cashback from canon too, so it will be even cheaper.

i did think about the 50mm prime f/1.8, its around £60, but i do use zoom quite a lot so i'd need to buy another lens, so decided against that.
