I'll be off to NYC soon for a few days and will be taking my D800

I want to travel reasonably compact so only want to take a couple of lenses , the bag I'm taking can only fit a few in

Out of this line up which would you take

Sigma 35 1.4
Nikon 16-35 f4 vr
Nikon 24-120 f4 vr
Nikon 85mm 1.8g
Nikon 70-200 2.8 mkii

I just can't decide

I took my 17-50 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 (crop sensor). Was flexible enough, but could have done with an ultra wide angle to get a sense of scale at times. Shutter gave up after a few days though, after which my iPhone did a splendid job.

It all depends what you're planning on shooting out there? My choices would be:

One:

Sigma 35mm

Two:

Sigma 35mm
Nikon 16-35mm

Three:

Sigma 35mm
Nikon 16-35mm
Nikon 85mm

When I went to NYC in 2001, I took my old Minolta 35mm SLR and a 28mm f2.8 which I regretted pretty much as soon as I'd landed.

If I was to go again there is no way I'd be going without an ultra wide of some sort. So I'd go the 16-35mm and 35mm f1.4.

Tricky one, when I went I had a compact with a 35mm lens and wished a few times it was wider but not that often so if your trip is primarily a holiday and not for photography you could get away with the 35mm.

Personally I think I'd go 24-120mm f4 for walk about and have the 35mm in the bag for when the light falls.

I went last year and shot with a 35mm all week. Awesome lens to shoot with in that city.

This ^

Went last year shot 10-20mm - 60%, 30mm 40% on a crop, I did wish I had something longer for when we went on the Statten Island ferry, It wasn't long after Sandy hit and that was the closest we could get to the Statue of Liberty:mad:

I have done New York with a Can on 5D MKII and the 24-105f4 lens, I did wish i had something a little wider, but it coped very well for 80% of all the shots i wanted.

Thanks for the input so far

so the 16-35 is a definite

The 35 1.4 would be great for night shots although I'm not sure I want to take it as I rarely take my gear out on an evening

I'm undecided on the 70-200 or 85
I may want the longer range for some things but the 85 is small and light, hmm decisions decisions

Unless you have specific uses in mind I wouldn't bother with anything too long, I've been happy enough with a 16-35 and 50/1.4 in NY in the past but it depends on your style and any shots you particularly want obviously...

I have decided on the 16-35 , 35 1.4 and the 70-200 and a 1.4x tv

I can fit them all in my hand luggage just about but leave whichever I feel I won't use on a particular day in the safe

I fancy doing something a little different from the Empire State or rockerfella ,maybe a panorama taken with the 70-200 to get an ultra high res shot and if I succeed and it's good enough I may possibly have it made into a wallpaper for my attic

You've decided already, but I'd bring the 35+85. The 85 would do what you planned to do with the 70-200, while the 35 takes care of the rest. Have fun whatever lenses you pick though, NYC is on my list of cities to visit this year (and I'll be taking a 35 myself, will probably visit B&H to stock up on Diafine and Tri-X).

Pretty much decided on the Canon 35mm f1.4, B&H have a second hand one in stock, and have seen one or two on Craigslist if not.

But my heart is in this lens and people should follow their heart.
