Which lenses for NYC

You've decided already, but I'd bring the 35+85. The 85 would do what you planned to do with the 70-200, while the 35 takes care of the rest. Have fun whatever lenses you pick though, NYC is on my list of cities to visit this year (and I'll be taking a 35 myself, will probably visit B&H to stock up on Diafine and Tri-X).

My thinking was that the 70-200 is 2.8 so it's not a million miles from the 85 1.8, but the 85 can't do 200mm or 280with a tc

The weight isn't an issue just space in my bag, it's ok for hand luggage but not practical for walking round with everything jammed in lol

I walk around with a similar gear set of lens to you and it works well. Am at Vietnam with it all but sub the 35 with a 24 70

If I was going to New York I'd definitely take my 35L without a doubt. As others have said it really does depend on what you're going to be shooting.
