Which Linux is best

i've been using mint for a couple of years now and i think it's great. only use windows for gaming these days

I like Ubuntu however 11.4 with gnome seems to have utterly ruined my future with gnome. This is utterly annoying because since KDE4 came out, I have never bothered and thats what moved me to Gnome. If I cannot get gnome back to how it was then Im no longer interested in that either.

Just out of curiosity whats different in gnome in 11.04 than 10.10?

In truth, Im not entirely sure.

The unity interface is stupid, but thankfully you can get rid of that. I didnt know that when I posted and I was perhaps too hasty... I thought at the time, that this was the default UI and it was NOT go-back-to-gnome-able but I was wrong.

Still, with 10.4 ( I opted to go back to 10.4 as its the LTS version for what thats worth, which is probably nothing ) but it was working fairly well for me, but as soon as I upgraded to 11 ( Note, that I did upgrade and not do a fresh install ) the window bar and widgtets vanished and I was completely unable to recover from them... i still have not. I have taken the HDs out and Im having a shot at Mint 11 and Fedora 15 on other HDs.

For what its also worth, Fedora has a similar UI to that Unity junk in Ubuntu, so im not going that direction either... MiNT 11 looks nice however... I will give that a proper run... Live is all very well, but its like going back to a Celeron its that bad.

If Mint does not solve the issues then I will just put Debian 6 back on and have done.

My Sabayon Setup is still flawless might I add.

Fedora, as with all other major distros, is starting to ship Gnome 3. It was released around the time that Canonical implemented Unity in Ubuntu and, yeah, it does look pretty similar to Unity.

I daresay there'll be a backlash against Gnome 3 and that the 2.x series will be forked.

Yes, I know that it has Gnome 3, but was that it?

Not happy at all with it.

KDE 4 was awful for me, and now Gnome 3 - Come Back Blackbox, all is forgiven. Ah well at least XFDE isnt too bad.

hehehe,

@FatRakoon, is XFDE a hybrid of XFCE and LXDE ...

LOL... Erm... yeah.... ( Fingers crossed )

LOL

Seriously, yeah, I meant them both but NOT as a hybrid... I must have had a mental failure I suppose?

I quite like LXDE possibly more than I like XFCE but they are both really decent alternatives

Archlinux user for 3 years. Used many distro's over the years and i couldn't be happier with Arch. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners though...

Oh I wouldnt say that.

I love Sabayon and thats a Gentoo distro and while I have used Linux for many years now, I still know sod all about it... Mainly because of idleness and the fact that while I like toying with various distros on my testing boxes, I have stayed with Sabayon since v3 because its so reliable.

Its very much jumping in at the deep end that some people need.

I tried Arch Linux back in 2007. I liked what I saw, especially the bringing together of many configuration settings into one central file, rc.conf.

Unfortunately, the lack of signed packages was and still is a showstopper for me.

Yer this is the one and only thing I don't like about it. But if you close your eyes and go for it it's all good, hopefully.... :p

There is work being done for Pacman signing but it's very slow progress. Also I came to the conclusion it would offer a fairly limited benefit because other than the core packages, they are maintained by every man and his dog. Signature or not it's all a bit of nasty blind trust :(
