Which Linux?

The options are;

DSL
Gentoo (xfce4)
Arch
Slackware
Slitaz
Puppy Linux
Tiny core linux
xubuntu with XFCE
Debian
CrunchBang
TinyMe

Network testing, only aircrack really but i suppose i could use it as a router because that'd also help :D

I imagine AirCrack on that could take a fair old while :D

If you're familiar enough with Linux, maybe just go for Debian and work from the CLI? It'd be definitely be a lot more usable then :)

I've only used Ubuntu and Bt3 in the past and that was for a few hours - i don't really know the ins and outs.

Vector Linux isn't too bad on poor hardware and is another option to try if you have the time. Puppy was my favourite though when making some old office boxes into Internet stations.

have a read of: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

Ubuntu needs:
Ubuntu should run reasonably well on a computer with the following minimum hardware specification. However, features such as visual effects may not run smoothly.

* 700 MHz x86 processor
* 384 MB of system memory (RAM)
* 8 GB of disk space
* Graphics card capable of 1024x768 resolution
* Sound card
* A network or Internet connection

Xubuntu needs:

Minimum requirements

* 333 MHz processor
* 192 MB of system memory (RAM)
* At least 1.5 GB of disk space
* VGA graphics card

Recommended minimum requirements

* 800 MHz processor
* 256 MB of system memory (RAM)
* 6 GB of disk space
* Graphics card capable of 800x600 resolution

Hmmm... don't know what the minimum specs are, but BackTrack sounds like your boy. BT4 is going to need much more resources than you have, but perhaps an older version or even change the default window manager to fluxbox/openbox?

Hello again :D

I have gone with CrunchBang Linux [Ubuntu based with less specs] but what i need to do is get a start menu on there which means a different windows manager?
All i need is a simple thing like the Windows 98 start menu :D

Any ideas?

Right click on the desktop?!

TBH, if you want to use aircrack, the time you'll save by installing linux on a really slow speed cpu based pc rather than making a 5gb partition available on your windows box, installing ubuntu so that you can dual boot and running it from there is marginal if any.

*this statement is based on the possibility of your fastest pc not being a 333 MHz beast.

Ubuntu if your fully new to Linux, or Arch if you want a better learning experience ;)

Hmm interesting, That gave me in order (Kubuntu, Opensuse, Ubuntu, Mandriva, and Linux mint all at 100%). I have a 1.73GHz 2GB DDR2 laptop that I'm sure would run a little quieter without an increasingly heavier Windows Vista HE on it.
