I'm planning to upgrade my 3800 x2 (stock) for a very cheap C2D system, as I think £80-90 for 2Gb (branded ram off the bay)

to overclock my 3800x2 is too much. I'm looking for the cheapest C2D setup that would allow me to hit around 3ghz, please suggest some CPUs.

Any help/advice is very much appreciated.

Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 at £54 will see you 3ghz.

totally agree and you can get OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series DDR2 for less than £60. Add to this an AC7 pro and you can have 3.2ghz (400x8) without a problem.
And dont believe that the smaller cache has an adverse effect on performance. An [email protected] with 4gig Ram outperformned my E6300 at 3.4 with 2gig ram in real world CPU heavy tasks. Not sure about gaming as the E2180 rig had an 8400GS.
