Hey all

Ever since one of the i-lans where I had a new PSU that wiped 3 of my 4 hdd's (all IBM, but quantum (now maxtor) survived), I have been firm believer that IBM are evil, and I migrated to mostly Western Digital HDD's.

Hearing good things about the seagates, and even the maxtors. Wondered what peoples preferences were and why?

Ie speed / noise / warranty / stability.

I go for Samsung where ever i can. The run very cool and are silent. I have had roughly 10 Samsung drives and all still going strong.

If I cant get Samsung I go for WD for the same reasons above.

It's a pity there is so little hard data available on manufacturer-dependant disk failure rates, it seems to me there's an industry wide cover up hiding this information from prospective buyers. Just try searching the internet for info and you'll see what I mean. It's not like the information is not available - it's just not available to you and me.

One thing is clear, the manufacturers claims for reliability are woefully inaccurate. MTBF is hopelessly optimistic, AFR isn't much better. Claims of <1% failures/year are shown to be completely wrong with real-world estimates varying from 4% to 13% depending on what you define as 'failure' and who examined the failed drive.

So all our opinions are just that - biased, unsubstantiated, personal preferences. But what else is there? I have no objection to people slamming Samsung and saying they're **** when the manufacturer won't release data to prove otherwise. Same for all of them. I would also be stupid to defend the credibility of claims to better durability of other brands for the same reason.

Good points there Chris. Some are just fault OTTB tbh as well as after use, a mate of mine brought 4 * 500gb for a RAID setup, 1 had to be sent back immediately, another went after 2 weeks :(
