Which MMO?

But as a game, WOW lacks any kind of depth, difficulty or challenge.

I agree. And I play it, albeit casually. Nowadays the majority of gamers seem to want instant gratification. There is no risk - dying just gives you a meagre 10 minute penalty and a repair bill if you can't find your body. You don't lose anything.

Despite being born into these sort of games, I do hope that something much more challenging and rewarding comes up soon. When I do a 'heroic' dungeon, I want to feel that it is a challenge and that each pull requires coordination and concentration rather than just button mashing 1,2,3,4. And I'm a tank too. I hear people raving about Ultima Online and SW:G but I never had a chance to try those out, and from what I gather, they aren't the same anymore.

I just hope some developers are willing enough to take a risk and make something different. I haven't really seen any 'innovation' in the MMO industry for a long time, instead games just repeat the tried and tested formula of WoW (and even Everquest before it) yet do not topple it for exactly the same reason.

Sadly, I can't really see anything in the works yet that looks to change this. Mortal Online has had a good stab at it, but it is unfinished and clearly lacking in content. I'm still keeping my eyes on GW2 because I loved the original. It might not be difficult, but at the very least it should be new and refreshing and that is something worth waiting for.

i've played quite a few mmo's, as you swg was my fav but then it got destroyed, then it was everquest 2 then wow then back to Eq2, ago of conan, star trek....

Eq2 is deffo the best if you like mature, guild raiding or small groupage.
its engine is updated allot and theres allways plenty to do, i'm 43 and love it.

until the new star wars mmo comes its my no1 and i'll play it until i'm in my grave, lots of friends i have met online and met in rl.

Probably I 'm jaded but just about every MMO announced or released in the last few years looks the same old thing, no innovation going on at all. Apart from Guild Wars 2 which does seem interesting, at least they are trying to do different stuff, bringing in new angles on the game mechanics(even if its still a somewhat cliched fantasy setting)....so, that is the only one I'm looking out for atm.

I suppose if you are new to MMOs then you are spoilt for choice though...but for an old MMO dog like me, most stuff out there looks totally uninspiring. You know, been there done that got the t-shirt, a million times already.

I've actually gone back to UO :)
I played from Beta and then about 5 years of live.
I then left it for the past 7? years and went back two weeks ago.
I was rather surprised to find that after 7 years all of my characters were still available.
They had of course lost their houses - but their bank vaults were still full.

The game is nothing like I played all those years ago.
There seems to be about a tenth of the player base that there once was and to be honest - the game is showing its age.
Saying that - I'm still enjoying it more than some of the newer releases and I think it will keep me going until something new comes out.

EQ2 was the only other game that I really played for a long time.
Everything else lasted from either a month (Matrix Online) to a year or so (AO).

Fallen Earth. Not really close to pre CU SWG, but a damn sight closer than anything else I've played.

As above...they were offering a 10 day free trial a bit back.

I've been in the same situation as you (OP) and been through a fair amount of P2P and F2P games, sadly nothing comes close to SWG Pre-CU, you could have course try some of the non SOE servers that are running vanilla SWG, though they're not very populated.

So just to up date, so far I've downloaded and tried the following:

World of Warcraft
Star Trek Online
Eve
Lord of the Rings Online

None of them feel right for me, which is a crying shame really as I loved the idea but can not stand the lack of depth with the exception of Eve...

Eve has almost too much depth but is not attractive to me as it lacks any twitch style game play as far as I can tell and there is no getting out and running about...

I've seen so many games have so much potential if done right just be utterly the same, I had hopes for the new Star Wars game but that's just another adventure game and not a true mmo in my eyes

SOE & Lucas Arts are to narrowminded to realise the cash cow they are still sitting on with Star Wars Galaxies....

Simply bring out a "Classic server" and update the graphics engine.... and in my opinion watch it become flooded with players past, and many more wanting something that breaks the WoW mould... If they did that I honestly believe it would become very big again!

Absolutely agreed. Classic SWG is the best MMO I've played. I loved that game. I know loads of people who quit and still pine for the classic SWG.
