Which mobo/CPU/RAM upgrade from my 2500k?

Yeah......it's not fixed! :(

I've just been on The Division for no more than 30 minutes and the game has crashed to desktop again - and according to hwinfo64 my temp reached 92°C!

I powered down immediately and opened up the case and it was HOT!!!! and I mean everything seemed hot - the RAM was hot to the touch and the backplate for the CPU was hot too! I'm going to try re-applying the thermal paste a bit better but failing that I can't see I can do much else other than get a better CPU cooler and possibly even a different case with better airflow!

Is it usual for RAM to get that warm while gaming? (unfortunately I didn't think to check the RAM temp before powering down!)

The case is the Antec P100 so 1 fan at the front (albeit its covered by a "door") and one at the rear - both are working as far as I know!

humour me, just open the side of the case up and run your game again. see what happens...
i suspect that it's overheating due to lack of ventilation.
failing that, try and reseat your heatsink properly? :P

I've reseated the CPU fan but will give The Division another go to see what happens with the sides of the case off and the front door open!

Is there a decent CPU stress test within windows that I can use so I can keep an eye on the temps and fans while its going?

Right, I've re-seated my CPU fan and just gamed for about an hour in The Division and according to hwinfo64 my CPU temp reached 69.4°C - albeit this was with both sides off my case and the front panel door open!

I dropped back to desktop at various stages and the temps seemed reasonable but one thing I noticed was that neither my front or rear case fan was running!?!? I assume these only kick in at a given temperature inside the case (ie. nothing to do with the CPU temp per se?) - is there any way to check when these would kick in?

Additionally one other strange thing - my RAM appears to have dropped back to 2400MHz - would this has been reset when I re-seated the CPU and fan??

prime 95. it's more of a torture test than anything that resembles real life gaming loads. if you can pass 2h prime, can be 99.5% sure your cpu clocks are stable.

not sure. shouldn't be. just re-set the DOCP settings.

as i suspected the whole computer is probably being starved of decent ventilation which might be half the problem why the CPU gets toasty. also the fact that vega is a power hungry/hot card, your case needs to have decent ventilation.

Hmmm, gaming with the side off doesn't appear to be a problem hovering around 70°C but as soon as I put the sides on I'm getting almost 84°C - which I'm assuming is still too high? (especially as it seemed to get to that within half an hour on The Division - I assume a prolonged session would see it go even higher?)

The case isn't exactly cooling-friendly as far as I can see - can anyone recommend me a decent CPU cooler first and foremost and possibly even a new case that has good air cooling?

yeah, the case is past its sell-by date :p
just run it with its side panel off tbh.

if you want a decent cooler...

Thanks for the continued help tamzzy - although is there any reason you'd go for this cooler ahead of say, the Cooler Master 212 Black Edition - I only ask as I've never heard of "Alpenfohn" before and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of reviews and installation guides out there for it?? (I know this one is a few quid more but I've had Cooler Master products before and they have always been OK in my experience)

212 black edition is essentially just a 212 evo in black, paying that few extra quid for black paint.
they've both got performance that are relatively similar, so get either

I think I'm going to give the Cryorig H7 a go to replace the stock cooler - mainly because it's listed as being 145mm high compared to 159mm on the Cooler Master and Alpenfohn coolers and having looked at my case, they might well be pushing it size-wise!

Seems to get very good reviews - has anyone any experience of this particular cooler??

Maximum CPU Cooler Height 6.7" (170 mm)

it's fine

Hmmm, might reconsider in that case - gets very good reviews but the cooler has to be mounted while the motherboard is vertical because you have to screw from underneath to affix the cooler - bet that's fun!!!

Just a quick update on this thread for everyone that chipped in - all is *touch wood* working OK!

Ended up getting the Cryorig H7 cooler and it appears to have worked a treat - max CPU temp after a good 2 hours on The Division last night was 56.6°C (compared with nearing 80°C using the stock cooler with the side off my case and over 90°C with the case closed!)

All in all I'm very happy with the upgrade to the Ryzen system - although as usual I've ended up spending far more money than originally intended!

I suppose I should start looking at overclocking and/or undervolting now!

Thanks again for everyone's help! (especially @tamzzy )
