Which MOBO?

The Gigabyte S3 is the same as the DS3 but 88 quid! Out of those two tho, go for the DS3. But if you want to save as much money as possible, go for the S3!

Only difference is the capacitors, so the S3 will last 4 yrs instead of 6yrs basically!

Not sure it theres a problem with connecting front speakers and mic! Maybe it was his case??

I had to send my DS4 back recently and it was confirmed faulty, usually I don't go for Gigabyte I go for Abit boards. As a replacement I ordered an Abit AB9 Pro for my 6600! Has great reviews, thats another option!

i suppose so but i like asus and gigabyte better, maybe there has just been a bad batch of the DS3's people seem to like them a lot (especially for overclocking) just some have been faulty and replaced. Anyone else?

DS3 squeaks under Priming, I'm not sure if it does this with any other application.

1 more important thing is, DS3 don't have PCI bus lock, so if you overclock your FSB, your soundcard will not function properly (in my case an X-fi XtremeMusic).

Both are overclocking-related, if you don't plan on OCing, I suppose it's fine.

But to avoid the potential troubles, you can go the Asus P5B route, that board also overclocks very well.

Does that mean any PCI card won't work well if your FSB is o/c'd?

i hope not, why is there so much talk about the DS3 then but hardly any about the p5b?

1. The P965 S3/DS3/DS4/DQ6 are all exceptionally easy to overclock and the directions on how to do it are freely available.
2. The DS3 outsells the P5B about 10:1 in the UK market so I would expect there to be 10 times as many issues if they both had the same failure rates.
3. People will recommend what they chose themselves hence you will get 10x the number of recommendations for the Gigabyte as the ASUS.
4. The issue with the front panel connectors is quite straightforward. The Gigabyte board does not have the HD Audio front panel connector in an ATX compliant position so any case that would normally work fine with an ATX motherboard may not have a long enough cable to reach the header pins. Lian Li PC7's definitely don't have long enough cables.
5. I've never had an ASUS P5B but I have had a DS3, several DS4's and a DQ6 and I have not had any issues with them. Someone I sold one to had to RMA it after the LAN failed, but that could have been how it was packaged for shipping as it worked when it was dispatched.
6. Either board will be fine. Personally I would go for the Gigabyte as you'll always be able to sell it on whereas the P5B will always be a niche market in comparison.
