Which motherboard for 9800X3D?

Spec me!

I have an Intel 13700. This is, of course, a ticking time-bomb. The obvious thing to do is replace it with a 9800X3D when they become available, which will require a new motherboard. It will need three x4 M.2 slots (1x 1 TB, 2x 4 TB). Format is ATX.

I have 10 Gb ethernet so the board needs to support that directly or have a slot into which I can plug an ethernet card (PCIe v4 x4, Intel X550), but that card needs to be at least 4 slots distant from the GPU slot as I have a RTX 4090.

I'm not too fussed as to the speed of the M.2 slots but the GPU slot needs to be PCIe v5.0 for future GPU support.

Substantial. Obviously I realise that boards with 10 Gb NICs onboard will be much more expensive, but if that's the best way to go then so be it.

if money is no issue, then

is the best you can get with 10GB port as you require. If you nee something less expensive then ASUS X870 crosshair but check if there is enough space for the 10GB card.

I've seen some boards with 10gb onboard. Let me have a look..

Asus ProArt x870e

I am sure there will be others.

I was looking at x870e because why not? Although there are probably cheaper ways to do it, I am not sure you will get 10gb with anything less.

Also been looking into this and agree with the above in terms of lane sharing.

ProArt X670E-CREATOR WIFI has 10gb Lan and can be had for £445, check the specs in case I made a mistake which is highly unlikely ;)

Thanks everyone. Plenty of choices, it seems. Just got to wait for the CPU to get back in stock.

Buy a board without 10Gb and use your existing Intel NIC.

Ah, but on many boards there isn't sufficient room between the primary GPU slot and the second slot to cope with a 4-slot GPU.

Every single board in X870E has lane sharing compromises due to all the board makers sending the onboard usb 4 chip through the CPU lanes.

This is why I never bothered upgrading. Despite the X870 Hero having some nice aesthetic changes over my x670 I can run 4 nvme’s with no penalty.

Indeed, and few boards will have PCI-E 4.0 in the fifth PCI-E slot, if any slot at all. I see your dilemma.

Watercool your 4-slot GPU into a single slot. Fit all the peripherals in the newly exposed slots!

Any specific reason you need 10Gb? Not attempting to poke holes; just curious. I ask because the X550 is more of an enterprise grade NIC for 10GbE rather than a consumer NIC.

Edit: I checked the spec sheet for the X550 and it's PCI-E 3.0 x4 - not PCI-E 4.0 x4. You could slap that in pretty much any fifth PCI-E slot.
