Quite simply which mp3 player should I get?

I was thinking of getting a ipod nano 8 gig but the only time I will use it would be in the gym and when I'm away on holiday, so it may be a bit OOT... I just need something small and solid state memory.

Yeah something small for that, iPod Shuffle will do but there's some nice small Samsung ones around the same price too that might be worth a look at.

Just ordered the 8gb Nano, wanted solid state after trashing 2 4th gen Ipods with hdds.

You can pickup the 2/4gb nanos cheap enough, tho the shuffles are tiny, no screen tho.

you should have chose the d2 over the 8gb nano. twice the battery life and better sound quality. and video support and everything else that comes with it - ums and upgradable memory ect

the shuffles are great for the gym, but no screen would annoy me.

Iriver S10 > Shuffle

ROFL I shouldnt even compare them considering the Shuffle is so rubbish (UI; Sound Quality (v2 is worse than v1) etc.). The only thing the shuffle has is a clip...

If people recommend the Shuffle they really dont know what they are talking about IMO. Though the S10 hasnt got the best battery life because it does have a LCD screen...

Meh Ipod nano's have turned more into a fashion thing now. Creatives and samsungs are far more practical and reliable. Ypu can get some really thin samsung players for the same price as a nano and are far more reliable :)

Considering the user is going to be in a gym, how does having a LCD screen matter. All he wants to do is listen to music in the gym with a small mp3 player, ie. Shuffle

i guess because if he wants to listen to a specific track he has to skip through his music blindly?

Its well known to be the biggest failing of the Shuffle...

You try finding a specific track in a few hundred? Also no ability to setup adhoc playlists or anything you would associate the Ipod range when it comes to UI/ease of use.

Im buying a player for the gym and theres so much better out there than the Shuffle its ridiculous...

The Shuffle isnt marketed as doing anything other than what it does. The idea is that you don't know whats coming on next. Hence no screen. You make a playlist in itunes, then you put it on the shuffle and play it in order, or randomly. I quite enjoy preparing my music for the gym the next day. You can even let it autofill so that you dont actually know whats on it if that floats your boat. For the price, I think its great.

If you want a cracking little player which is perfect for the gym and very cheap, buy one. If you want a fully featured mp3 player that you can sit and fiddle with for hours, buy something else.

Not disagreeing in the slightest Jofujofu, but I cant see how a lack of key features that made the Ipod range as successful as they are can be termed a feature in itself

To me it seems to be clutching at straws when you have to term the inability of not knowing what the next track will be as a feature or how the Shuffle is actually marketed. Looking at Apples website it is quite worrying what they term a feature tho...

Also the latest version of ipod Shuffle is meant to have inferior sound quality which irrelevant of where you want to use them is the main point of having a mp3 player (or any audio equipment). All in all its just hard to recommend the Shuffle as I just cant find anything that sets it apart or a proper feature that makes it special.

Im not a big fan of the Ipod range in all honesty, I think they are great for what they are but very one-dimensional and lack a decent amount of features for the cachet of owning one. I guess its the case of 'it does exactly what it says on the tin'...

Ipod Shuffle, hence the name?
Also, again, if I was to go to a gym and listen to music. I highly doubt finding a song will be top priority. Furthermore, theres a reason why shuffle only comes in 512mb/1GB.

Thanks for the advice

I purchased an Ipod nano (8Gig) now - and will get the nike jogging thingy when I have some time. looks it sounds funky... I may get the 1gig creative player later as well soley for the gym.

Constructive Comment!

Fair enough Mate, I suppose it all depends what you want from a player at the end of the day. My Shuffle isn't my main mp3 player, I use it solely for the gym. From that point of view I wouldn't recommend it for 'normal' usage, as it is very limited in what it does.
