Looking to have a network attached drive, and was going to get the WD Mybook untill reading reviews about sharing music etc, and decided its not a good idea.

Thinking about the LaCie 2big Network 1TB or the Maxtor Shared Storage II 1TB.

What should we get for ~150-250?

Was thinking of getting an enclosure and a Samsung F1 drive too.

Everything arrived this morning

First impressions are positive - feels well put together and installing the drives was easy. Had it installed and plugged in about 15 mins. That's when I hit my first problem - no matter what I tried I couldn't connect to it. I tried both from my desktop and laptop no luck. I could ping the NAS but installation software couldn't see it. Both my machines are connected via wireless so I plugged them directly to the router and all instant connection. So far I've been unable to work out if this is a feature or bug (you can access the shares via wireless no problem).

Software installation is simple, just follow the wizard and within 10 mins you're ready to create your volumes. I opted for RAID 1. I'm moving a 3GB of stuff across and getting around 12-13 MB transfer rate according to Vista Pre SP1 (not sure how accurate this is). As I type this I finally got SP1 download notification so I'll install it later and see what I get.

Not had a chance to play with any of the other features yet but will report back later.

Download the new firmware and the new synology disk assistant - I had the same problem but now its ok over wireless.

Bloody hell thats a lot of money! Did you not like the Icy Box IB-NAS4220-B at all? Personally I think it looks a lot better but then I have had so many white/beige PC cases over the years I am just sick of anything white ;)

I actually think the Icy Box looks ugly in that picture. I wasn't too sure on the white when I ordered but I liked the features and reviews persuaded me.

Now that I've got it I think it looks great but then I would say that having spent all that money. :D

Use task manager to see what transfer speed you're getting. I don't think Vista SP1 is very accurate.

It may cost a bit more than the icybox but its because unlike raidsonic synology actually release firmwares that work. It also has a lot more features compared to the icybox.

It does look good...

Was just having a look around the Synology Forum, to see if the DS-207+ supports installing SqueezeCenter, which apparently it does.....this is one of the main reasons I am looking at the QNAP.

Does the DS-207+ go into Standby with the F1s OK? :)

I have a samsung 500gb in my DS107 and that goes into standby no problem - but i had the same drive in my old Icy Box IB-NAS4220-B it would stay on constantly no matter what i set the time out to.

The F1's have gone into standby fine. The fan is a little loud though and remains on full constantly. This is by design and the HDD's haven't gone above 32 degrees.

Handy enough.....I see QNAP have the same kind of thing in place as well...:)

Fair point but there is a lot of information in the Synology forums so I was happy there wouldn't be any problems. Also it has recognised my UPS without any hassle so at the moment I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

In case anyone is interested I was able to use these instructions to get my HP C4180 setup as a network printer.

The multi function aspect doesn't work but that's not a problem for me as I use scan direct to memory card anyway.
