Which NAS?

Shine,
Is this a true NAS, or does it require special software to be installed before you can connect to it?
I have a netgear SC101 which is the worst NAS ive ever owned. Its slow and you have to install their own buggy software in order to access it. this sounds a lot nicer.

I just bought a brand new CS407 (not e), for £300, bargin I think.
I just need to get 4 1tb samsung F1s for it now.

I want the redundency (raid5) im assuming i will combine 3 drives for storage and one for redundency?

You will Deffo be happy with it after using the SC101 - just make sure you download the new firmware as it makes it even better

I take it the firmware update doesnt take the array with it? I've got 1.6TB of data on mine already which I really dont want to have to copy again.

Not too sure mate best check out the faq on the website - not got mine setup in raid but never lost anything after upgrading the firmware with a single disk.

Edit: synology website says:
Normally, upgrading the firmware of the Synology Product will not affect data on the Synology Product. However, to ensure data security, it is recommended that you back up your data before update.

thats a yes then, the firmware wont affect the data, but of course they add that little get-out clause :)

The firmware only upgrades the software on the ROM, technically speaking it shouldnt have any effect on the OS installed or the data for that matter.

I upgraded mine to the latest firmware on the day of release and the RAID array wasn't touched. It might reset the admin password though - which can be reset easily enough.

I've just ordered a Synology DS-207+ with 2 Samsung 750GB F1's. I'll be setting it up Sat. If you can wait I'll let you know how I get on with it.

I have just ordered the same. But I can not decide whether to put the two Samsung F1's in the NAS or swap them with the two WD 500Gb hard disks I have in my main PC.
