Which NAS?

I'm gonna have fun playing around with this thing! Who knew storage could be so fun!

Yep, I'm a loser.

Thats still being heavily under-utilised ;)

Nice! Don't want to load too much on it though, being a budget model it doesn't have the horsepower of the higher-end units. Glad to see Transmission is available for it though, I have it sideloaded on my WD NAS at the moment, works great with a Transmission Remote app on my PC and Transdroid on my phone for searching/adding/controlling torrents.

Day off work tomorrow so I'll finally have time to have a proper play around with it and get it all set-up properly.

Got it set up now, a but confusing to get to grips with at first but I'm learning, transferring all my files to it now as I type this. Very impressed!

+ 1 to the synology camp - although apparently you can pull apart some QNAP boxes, upgrade the RAM and CPU. There is also a possibility of running KVM virtualisation on them in the future (assuming you've upgraded them to give them enough grunt!)

I currently have a qnap TS 470, it has a full 1155 socket so CPU easily upgrade able. It's a beast

Going to keep an eyeoutforan i7 3770t :D

Asustor are the ones to watch, the 202te's are tremendous value as they double as a htpc

Used to swear by qnap but their constant dragging their feet with updates swayed me away from them. They also stopped supporting older models quicker than synology.

Switching to synology and seeing how often they address security vulnerabilities and update things like java has been a god send in comparison and I'm glad I paid the ever so slight premium over the qnap boxes - just an FYI for anyone contemplating to go to either supplier. ;)

Don't see the point of HDMI output - Most NAS's will struggle to decode 1080p videos! especially with an Atom CPU! ;)

Always better using a seperate decoder (WDTV Live? :) ) - let the NAS just do the streaming.

PS - Anyone thinking of using Plex for decoding just remember it'll need a 2Ghz Core 2 Duo CPU and above to decode 1080p content too

With the WD Red 3TB on offer today I have just plumped for one in a Synology DS112J, sorry for the thread hijack but thought I'd bring the Hdd to everyones attention

Isn't the DS213j about the same price? It's a much better spec.
I originally bought a ds112J and returned it for a DS213j

Not sure how many years a DS112j would be supported with it being a 2012 model

Would a PS3 be able to stream video from one of these Synology devices?

Do they operate that system where a drive can fail and you won't lose data, just replace the drive and continue (I appreciate this isn't a backup btw)?

Yes and yes. Two drives in Raid 1 would mirror each other. One fails just replace and it rebuilds.

Really happy with my new Synology DS214+, excellent build quaility, excellent software, easy to install 3rd party software, a great all round package.
