hi there :)

i have £250max to spend. there seems to be lots of netbooks around ( too many to choose from )

i would like to have xp - wouldnt mind if its a self install

thanks

Aside from disk space, the specs for nearly all the laptops are pretty much the same. The defining factor is generally the keyboard, which depends on the screen size of the laptop.

If I were you I'd decide what sized netbook you want and then choose from there.

(Keep in mind that the 8.9" and 10" screens have the same resolution so there isn't really any gains from this save the more user-friendly keyboard)

Acer One with XP is £299. So £50 more than you wanna spend. Get the Linux version £250ish...then install XP on it from a USB stick. Google is your friend ;)

Best thing to do is go to your local big PC store and have a play with their range - the slight differences in the keyboards can make or break a netbook...the NC10 does look awful nice though:)

I ended up going for the Advent 4211 - now running Vista, 2GB RAM and the MSI Wind 1.09 BIOS.

Do the netbooks have any limitations? Can it do everything a cheap xp/vista lappie can do?

And what version of linux is installed?

There's quite a lot of documentation from users who have installed Vista on all the netbooks actually - although the general consensus is to stick to XP as it's less resource hungry.

Drivers will always be an issue with Vista but I don't think it should be too much trouble tracking them down to be honest, a lot of the hardware in the netbooks are just off the shelf generic examples.

thanks for the comments, i was thinking about the acer 150. however i think i'll wait a few months and see whats going to available then. i dont really need a netbook so i'll save up some more money in the meantime :)

In a few months time, there will be something new round the corner, so you'll wait again and again etc. That's the problem with technology, it just keeps getting better.

vista also runs fine on my 4211, needs the extra gig of ram for it though.
if your going to hold out and save up a bit more the N330 dual core atoms would be the thing to wait for. currently its only a desktop chip so might be a long wait.

I would go for one with an SSD Hard Drive. Nice and cool.

Depends what you'll be using it for.

If you dont need much space then go for the very small capacity SSD's. If you want a normal amount of space then go for the regular large capacity hard drives.

I couldn't live with a 40GB SSD drive, not enough space for me. So i'm going for the Samsung NC10 with the 160GB HD.
