Which notebook cpu?

I have a budget of about 500-550 for a new notebook.
I am curious which processor I should aim to get, it seems to be:
celeron m < pentium m < centrino
And also sempron and turion fit in there somewhere.

I am guessing celeron m (and sempron) are the budget end so if I can stretch to a pentium m then thats better.
Out of those 2, the sempron seems to lead to poor battery life so I would assume celeron m beats the sempron.
Turion is 64 bit? so I guess it makes it a bit harder to compare.

The notebook isn't going to be for gaming particularly, just would like the best bang for buck. Battery life is also a huge bonus for notebooks so I don't want it to guzzle its battery too quick.

If anyone can offer any advice over which CPU to aim for (or a better criteria to judge them on) I would be grateful.

Cheers,
Ric.

Centrino is not a processor. It is what Intel brands its combination of Pentium M or Core CPU with an Intel chipset and Intel WLAN card.
Ah, never realised that. Guess im a sap for their advertising

Dual core is going to blow the budget so do you think I should aim to pick up a pentium-m as they ought be coming down in price with the new tech available?

Do I take it AMD isn't worth it for notebooks? Even with 64bit?

well if you will sell me a yonah notebook for £500 then I will. Otherwise I have to stick to a budget ;)

edit: yonah is both single and dual core cpus?

Intel® Centrino® Mobile Technology with Intel® Core™ Solo Processor T1350 (1.86GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB)

Isn't that a single core CPU? Fine it seems to be a dual core with a defective core so Intel deactivated it, but is that going to be effectively a single core Yonah?

Yes. Conroe cpus come out this month though so its worth waiting to see the pricing of core 2 laptops.

No hinting at competitor prices please.

Personally I have the Dell XPS M1210 with a T2500 and its plenty fast, much more powerful than I thought a laptop would be (in comparison to my Opteron 146 based desktop) so I am getting rid of the desktop.

thanks for that bobbler, actually found a dell dual core for £499.

I dont think I will wait for conroe - isn't that going to be aimed more at performance than battery life? I can't see it coming in on budget either.

I think it will have to be the dell unless I go for something that looks a bit better.

Cheers for your help
Ric.

Conroe is a desktop chip. The mobile version shall be called Merom and it should use less power than any other competing chip if forecasts are to be believed.

The trend in power dissipation is changing. The generation of chips that is launching soon will use less power than the chips they replace.

Ah, I did check the rules but you seem to have found a new one I havent seen in the list regarding competitors:

* Posting links to competitors websites
* Posting links to reviews that promote competitors
* Quoting the names or contact details of competitors
* Offering to provide the names or contact details of competitors
* Using the forums to notify a member of intent or actual supply of names or contact details of competitors
* Listing competitors names, URL's or e-mail addresses in signatures
* Listing competitors names, URL's or e-mail addresses in profile
* Posting links to or the mentioning of auction sites
* Disguising attempts to do any of the above

Dont mind accepting responsibility when I do break the rules, however I will not be told off for something just made up on the spot...

Um, what rule was he breaking? That is the first time I've seen that happen.

Have I broken the rule as OCUK sure as heck don't sell a dual core laptop dell laptop for £499?

Depend what you want from the laptop.

I use my Dell Inspiron 630m for Wireless Web Browsing, email and mainly doing work on.

The Pentium M 1.73GHz handles those tasks with utter ease extremely quickly. I'd say as good if not better than my 3.2GHz clocked Pentium 4 desktop system.

Can just about squeeze 5 hours from the battery as well which is a real bonus.

At the time of purchase I had the option of waiting another month for the Core Duo laptops but I decided against it as I got this laptop for a decent price and for my needs a Pentium M was plenty fast.

well I think the dell laptops I am looking at atm are the best priced I have found. For £499 I can 1 gig ram and pentium m or 512 ram and core duo.

The core duo is probably the most appealing, 512 ram is more than enough for day to day business and it can be upgraded more easily than the cpu.
