OK so ive decided to drag my sorry backside up to date with a new rig.

q6600
abit IP35
BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC (when I get the cash)
Samsung SpinPoint F1 750GB
etc etc

I'm still running XP Home on my old rig and am wondering which O/S to install, Im guessing it has to be the 64 bit version but thats all I know right now..

Any help would be great
Cheers

Phil P :)

You haven't said how much RAM you have but if its >= 4gb, then get 64bit Vista, less than 4gb and 32bit vista will do you fine. But yes that spec will run Vista very well.

b.e. OS.

seriously though, if you do a quick search (or just go through the past two pages in this section) you'll see a million 'XP or Vista' threads, enough information out there to help you make up your mind :)

my personal recommendation? XP 32bit :)
If it isn't broken, don't fix it!

As said earlier in this thread, if you have 4Gb RAM or more get Vista 64.

If you have less than 4Gb RAM get Vista 32-Bit.

If you only have 1Gb RAM stick with XP, Vista will run like an old dog with only 1Gb, if you have 2Gb I would go to Vista.

However, if you have old peripherals such as printers it might be worth checking the manufacturers website that there are drivers for that device to work with Vista, and check if it is only 32 or 64 Bit compatible. That may influence your decision.

Why? 64bit is no harder to set up or run drivers. The os itself will be slightly faster and you will not have to upgrade or reinstall in the future.

Get vista 64. It is absolutely silly/crazy to get a 32bit OS

Both my systems have 64bit CPU with 2GB of RAM but I see no reason for 64bit (HTPC and gaming rig)

The reason you should be thinking is why go 32bit.

Vista drivers have to be released in 32bit and 64bit. It's just silly getting 32bit. Unless your thinking it's going to be like xp64 was at first release. But it's nothing like that these days.

I see your point AH2.

Get 64Bit, even if you have 2Gb of RAM.

You can then upgrade your RAM to 4Gb in the future and the OS will see it and utilise the full amount.

Forgot about that...

Either

An older stable mature OS that does everything you want and will be supported for years to come

or

A new OS Microsoft is trying to ram down the throats of an unsuspecting and foolish foolish world.

This isn't a fashion argument. Look at the features both OS families offer. Work out which features are of benefit to you. Google for downsides to both OS families. Weigh up the facts and get the product that is right for you.

PS I'm still on Windows 2000 :)

Has Vista 64 got the same bugs as 32? (slow LAN, slow HD-HD transfers) Also isn't gaming slower on 64bit system? Do all third party applications work under 64bit?

Yes but only for some people. Also doesn't Sp1 solve this?

No
Do all third party applications work under 64bit?
99% do. a few don't like old autocad software and a few other bits and bobs. But nothing most users use.

I cant believe this argument is taking place. I can see why some people would prefer XP over Vista, personally I love Vista! :D works just as well as XP and is easier on the eyes and seems to flow much better.

What ever you get you should get 64 bit, why buy a CPU that your not going to use it to its full potential.

Please accept my sincere condonlences.

Vista x64 all the way, especially now the Lan problem is fixed for the vast majority of paeople :)

Burnsy

not for me :(

I really liked Vista, but until the LAN issue is fixed, I'm sticking with XP. 2MB/s just doesn't cut it! I even tried the SP1 beta, which didn't fix it :/

Ditto - I have gone back to XP and I am really hoping that it will be fixed in the final release of SP 1. If not XP does everything that I want it to do anyway :)

A new OS Microsoft is trying to ram down the throats of an unsuspecting and foolish foolish world.

And how are they 'ramming it down the throats' of anyone? If you mean it comes with virtually all new PCs, then that's not exactly a new thing. If anything, MS have realised that, for some obscure reasons, people want to stick with XP for even longer, and are making it available for system builders to put on new PCs.
