hi

I have been offered a OEM E6600 for the price of £165 inc. vat, I know that oem's only come with 1 year warranty.

Should I go for the above >>>> OR buy a 6400 retail, or wait out till the intel price cuts happen and buy a retail 6600.

I want to pair this with ddr2800 memory with this motherboard :

Abit Fata1ity F190HD mATX

I'd get a 4300 or 6300 then sell it on when the quad prices drop.
3.2ghz is more than plenty for say the next 6 months with a decent card.
I think people have gotten a little bit obsessed with these core 2 duo's.

nah ! I don't like the idea of buying a 4300, im not so keen on them, It has to be one of the following 6000 series chips:

6600 or 6400. Im yet to find out the stepping on the 6600's saying that Ive not heard of any bad ones.

I would get the 6600.

No doubt you will have a different obsession in 6 months time. I know i usually do. Fair enough, its only a year, but i find things usually go **** up straight away, or within a 3 months if they are faulty. (The only exception was a 1gb bigfoot hard drive I used to have)

Whats the chances of a duff cpu or something going wrong with a oem cpu ?

BTW steppings, my old stepping was a L628A345 week 28, is there any steppings or rev. what I can look out for ? What weeks or rev. tends to overclock well atm ?

At that price i'd go for the 6600, get a decent cooler and it should clock well. If your concerned about the warranty ask yourslef how long you keep a cpu for and if your going to do anything to it that would put it in serious danger, if not dont worry. As for the steppings seems to be hit or miss. Some do better than others but it doesnt seem as exact as amd64 steppings. there was something to do with the A or B if anyone can elaborate, i have a L629B clocked as in sig has been to 3.6ghz as well, just needed a lot more volts to do it :)

6400 comes highly recommended by me. I've now got mine stable at 3.2ghz and i think theres room for more in this little baby :D

To be honest i was in the same situation 6400 vs 6600. I just let my wallet do the thinking and my ass the clothes spending :p

At that price, there's only one answer! 6600 all the way :D The 9 x mult will make it nice and easy to reach the higher clocks :D Add the price of a Tuniq Tower, and it's still only the same price as a retail 6600 ;)

bad news people, went to the shop today, they sold out of the oem 6600's - Hot **** so quick, damn. I better go for a 6300/6400, then sell it 6 - 8 months later.

unlucky but you wont be dissapointed with a 6300/6400 both are excellent chips and arguably easier and more fun to overclock :)

So are the 6600's, fail to see the difference between maxing out a cheap cpu and maxing out a more expensive one tbh - overclocking is overclocking

I think theres a certain satisfaction in overclocking cheaper components thats greater than buying top end parts and doing the same, possibly proportional to the actual % gain in the overclock. Everyones different though i opted for my e6600 and havnt been dissapointed 1 bit.
