Which one for me - x1800xt or 7900GT??

:( I tried mate, the X1800XT 512mb is the better card, why did you buy a slower 256mb card for the same price? look at my above post explaining the technical stuff on this.

The 7900 GT overclocks fantastically
It runs cooler
Uses less power
He has the option to run SLI (performs better than xfire)
256 MB is fine at 12x10 resolutions
NV drivers are superior
512mb is not the be all and end all in todays games.

I benched a 7900 GT against an x1800 512mb and there was nothing between the scores.

He made a fine choice ;)

Easyrider, they've managed to bypass the overvolt protection on the 7900GT over at XS. Some guys are now hitting 12K in '05!

And yeah, i'd go for the 7900GT too ;)

Hate to say it easyrider but you are starting to sound like you camp nV. All stock, the X1800XT is faster and will cope with higher resolutions better with AA and AF - this is indisputable.

For those with SLi boards, it might be worth while going for the nV as indeed you have an option of SLi (but then again, how many people actually do buy a second card?). The 7900GT is cooler and less power demanding but either card requires an after market cooler as they are both noisy. In fairness, the cards are very similar but the crucial point is all about the resolution you play at and what eye candy you use. Generally ATI's suffer a lot less when using AA/AF and for the higher resolutions 512MB really makes a difference.

I just checked XS, that is a proper hardmod egt, and the same could be done for any card to overvolt and increases clocks. However, you can overvolt the ATi with software without invalidating the warranty.

lol :p

Nope not me I go on OP's info...

He said:

"The big selling point for the 7900GT is that its got more pixel pipelines (24 vs 16). Is that an advantage? Also, I have an SLi Motherboard - does that sway it in this cards favour?"

In this case with NV card falling in price its easily feasible to get another for SLI.

Hence the 7900 GT recommendation.
I don't care who makes what card :p
The 7900 GT is 188+vat at ocuk now and its been released a fortnight.
serious bang for buck if SLI is an option.

I agree but why be burdened with a single card solution with the x1800 when he has a sli mobo and the performance is not that fantastic over the 7900gt?

Indeed, the X1800XT can be overclocked as well, also the ATI card has more AND faster mem, 256mb 1360mhz ram VS 512mb 1500mhz ram.

overclock the ATI core,..........be interesting to see what happens.

Anyhows I tried etc etc :D

7900 GT memory does 1650/1750 with ease
Detecting optimal frequencies in coolbits gave me 1640 they are great clockers the 7900 GT this is well known. :)

I never actually said that voltmods couldn't be done with ati cards

It looks like some are doing the mod with conductive paste too, so that could be one way to get around the warranty issue. I'm not recommending ppl do this though.

i chose the 7900gt in the end for several reasons: low heat, low power consumption, overclockability (i also got the new zalman), and possible sli (though unlikely tbh).
After a lot of reading, they both (7900gt and x1800) seemed to perform around the same. I wasnt too sure about my power supply with the x1800 either (400W akasa paxpower), didnt really look into that though.

This wil be the last upgrade for my pc for a while now, probably until next year, as its so damn expensive :o . PS3/Xbox 360 next :D at least they dont need upgrading.

Criticise if you want :p

No need, you got yourself a stonking card and probably the right one considering the power draw on the ATi. Enjoy it! :D - I too am waiting for a PS3 - cannot wait. It will be plugged into my new 20" widescreen I'm getting after my uni finals exams as a treat for myself.

Excellent card for your money there!

I must admit if I bought a new one now I would probably get the 7900GT.

I have for the last week had a 7800GTX again (thanks Naffa) and I must admit the drivers are soooooo much easier to work with and overclocking is well easy as pie.

HOWEVER

Now I have my X1800XT back I am running the Omega 6.2's as the driver advantage has gone (no CCC here) and the tweaking ability of the X1800XT comes into its own.

However like I have said above if I was to make the decision now it would most likely be the 7900gt but that wasn't out when I got my X1800XT so meh!

Enjoy your card!
