Hi guys, i am looking at replacing the on-board GPU to a dedicated PCI-E card, Budget of around £35

Was either thinking of a 8600GT 512MB or a HD 5450 1GB

Any suggestions

Thanks
Dan

Hi there,

May I ask what you will be needing the GPU for?

If its just basic stuff and HD video decoding - then I would suggest waiting for the HD 6450 (review here) or just get a passive 5450 now.

If you want to play any kind of games, then I strongly recommend you look for a second-hand card. Cards like the 8800GT, 9800GT, 9800GTX(+), GTS 250, ATI HD 4770, 4830, 4850 can be had for than kind of price and completely blow cards like the 8600GT and 5450 out of the water in terms of gaming performance.

Hi, sorry i should have said, this card won't be used for games only HD stuff.

How much do you think the HD 6450 will be?

Thanks
Dan

According to this the 6450 is rumoured to hit retail on the 19th April (next Tuesday).

There will be two versions, a GDDR3 and GDDR5 version. The difference between the two is not only the memory -the GDDR5 version is clocked quite a bit higher (750MHz vs 625Mhz of the GDDR3 version), has twice the memory bandwidth of the GDDR3 and a peak power usage of 27W, compared to 20W with the GDDR3. However, which to go for really depends on the launch pricing.
